At yesterday's Washington State Senate Health & Long-Term Care Committee public hearing, Dr. Chris Bundy, Executive Medical Director of the Washington Physicians Health Program, testified in support of SB 6258. This bill allows physicians and physician assistants who may be permanently impaired by a health condition a non-disciplinary withdrawal from medical practice that honors their privacy, dignity, and service to humanity.

After several years of advocacy efforts, the Washington Physicians Health Program (WPHP) has helped successfully lead the Washington Credentialing Standardization Group in aligning the Washington Practitioner Application with credentialing best practices. By eliminating intrusive questions about past diagnosis and treatment and fine-tuning question wording, a major barrier to physician well-being has been removed.

Our History

The Washington Physicians Health Program was founded in 1986 by a group of concerned members of the Washington State Medical Association (WSMA) who represented the โ€œCommittee on Personal Problems of Physicians.โ€ The WSMA initially established the Washington Monitored Treatment Program with both the legislative and financial foundation to function as an independent, nonprofit organization. In 1993, the name was changed to the Washington Physicians Health Program. WPHP is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization under contract with the Department of Health to provide services for healthcare professionals. Virtually all hospitals, medical groups, dental groups, and veterinary groups in the state of Washington are well acquainted with WPHPโ€™s staff, mission, and outcomes.
