The Difference Between a House Cleaner and a Housekeeper
There’s been a lot of talk lately, so here’s a simple breakdown to clear up the confusion. These two roles are not the same, and understanding the difference helps set fair expectations for everyone involved.
🏠 House Cleaner:
Focuses on deep cleaning, maintenance cleans, move-in/move-out work, and detailed tasks. Examples include:
• Scrubbing bathrooms & degreasing kitchens
• Dusting, wiping baseboards, walls, and floors
• Cleaning appliances inside & out
• Sanitizing and restoring spaces to a clean, healthy environment
This is task-based work, usually scheduled weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or as a specialty cleaning. Hire a cleaner when you want your space thoroughly cleaned and refreshed.
🧹 Housekeeper:
Provides daily-living support inside the home. Examples include:
• Tidying, laundry, dishes, and bed-making
• Organizing and general household upkeep
• Meal prep and routine household support
This is ongoing support, helping the home run smoothly between professional cleanings. Hire a housekeeper for daily or weekly help that maintains your household.
Why This Matters:
Clear definitions lead to clear expectations. A client shouldn’t expect a cleaner to fold laundry or do dishes unless it’s booked. Likewise, a housekeeper isn’t typically doing deep-cleaning or move-out work. Understanding these roles protects your time, your boundaries, your rates, and the respect our industry deserves.
✅ Question for homeowners & clients: What do you think cleaners and housekeepers misunderstand the most about your expectations? Did this help clear things up?
