Rarely mentioned amongst the great pioneers of NASA Dorothy Vaughan lead the segregated West Computing during an era of Jim Crow laws — advocating for better rights for women in the workplace, and mentoring NASA pioneers, including Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, Eunice Smith, and Kathryn Peddrew.

Mary Jackson began her career working at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, where she worked as a member of the West Area Computing unit with Dorothy Vaughn as her supervisor. In 1953 Mary went to work for engineer Kazimierz Czarnecki who /suggested she become an engineer—for 20-years Mary would work as an aerospace engineer, and an advocate for women’s opportunities at NASA until she retired in 1985
