This was an interesting question that came in through our DMs — when should you do a biopsy on your enlarged lymph nodes? You don’t necessarily need a biopsy right away, but Dr. Bennett covers some of the indicators that a biopsy might be a good idea.

An ESR and an ANA alone are not thorough enough to figure out why you’re experiencing these symptoms. Dr. Stocker talks about what testing you’ll need to get to the bottom of this, and what specifically you might be looking for from an infectious vs. autoimmune perspective.

A high ESR alone unfortunately doesn’t give us enough info to know what’s going on, but it’s a definite indicator of inflammation. Our recommendation is to work on lowering your ESR temporarily, which can also help manage your other symptoms. Then, work with your provider to do a deeper dive into your labs to find the root cause of your inflammation and pain. You can check out our pinned post on Instagram to see what labs to request as a starting point!

Did you know that if you’re dealing with POTS and an autoimmune disease, your inflammation can actually exacerbate your POTS symptoms? There are ways to manage your POTS symptoms separately, from beta blockers to compression socks to magnesium, but our number one tip for people living with both POTS and an autoimmune disease? Manage your autoimmune flares so they’re not acting as additional POTS triggers.

Sure, it’s Halloween, but nothing scares us more than some of the s**t we see in our office on a daily basis 😱

On World Psoriasis Day, we want to bring special attention to a common comorbidity of psoriasis: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA). There are unfortunately no diagnostic tests for psoriatic arthritis, but Dr. Stocker outlines common symptoms that can lead to a clinical diagnosis. PsA can be especially dangerous because if left untreated, it can cause permanent damage to your joints. So please, please, please — if you’re having any kind of joint pain, but especially with a family history of psoriasis, see a provider for a diagnosis! We also strongly recommend the resources available on the Arthritis Foundation, National Psoriasis Foundation, and Society for Women’s Health Research websites for more information on PsA, how it can impact you, and how to seek treatment and relief. Why do you have an immune deficiency with your autoimmune disease? Two possibilities:

1️⃣ If you’re taking immunosuppressants, they’re doing their job! Unfortunately, their job (suppressing your white blood cell count) could be causing your immune deficiency.

2️⃣ You have a chronic condition that’s causing your neutrophils to burn out, which causes your white blood cell count to drop over time. We see this especially with cases of rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

As Seattle-based NDs, we’re licensed to practice medicine in the state of Washington the same way any primary care provider is. But if it’s hard for you to get to our offices, or if you’re located out of state, we offer telehealth options, as well! Dr. Bennett talks about what telemedicine looks like depending on where you’re based, and what to expect from virtual appointments.

We are begging you: Please stop buying parasite cleanses from randos on social media! There’s no way to know what’s in them, and they could be really detrimental to your gut health! Instead, work with a knowledgeable provider who can first test you for parasites (test, don’t guess!), and then create a treatment plan to cleanse you without causing more damage to your body.
