The Goldsen Institute Innovative Research in Health, Longevity, Sexuality, Gender, and Culture

The landmark study Aging with Pride: National Health, Aging, Sexuality and Gender Study is the first federally-funded longitudinal national project designed to better understand the aging, health, and well-being of LGBTQ midlife and older adults and their families. With over 2,400 LGBTQ adults ranging in age from 50 to over 100, this project deepens our understanding of how various life experiences are related to changes in aging, health and well-being over time. The findings paint a vivid portrait of the lives of LGBTQ midlife and older adults, documenting the interplay of risk and resilience to further understand those reaching their full aging and health potential and those most at-risk of health, social and economic disparities. This project is a collaboration with 17 community agencies serving LGBTQ older adults in every census division throughout the U.S. The project is funded through a federal grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA).

Did you know that Pride Place on Capitol Hill was supported in part by research from the Goldsen Institute? Our own Karen Fredriksen-Goldsen's report, "Aging in Community: Addressing LGBTQ Inequities in Housing and Senior Services" helped pave the way for the construction of Pride Place and future LGBTQ+ affirming senior housing initiatives like it.

Pride Place is under construction on Capitol Hill and has just opened applications. In new SAGE Perspectives article, Dr. Charles Hoy-Ellis (Goldsen Institute) explores the factors that contribute to health outcomes for transgender older adults, as well as how we may strengthen transgender health through research.

"These poor health outcomes are not the result of any inherent characteristics of being transgender, but arise from the chronic discrimination, victimization, and social marginalization they experience throughout their lives."

Read more in SAGE Perspectives:

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine have recognized that older transgender adults have some of the most adverse health outcomes of any marginalized populations in America.
