November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease, and among our patients, approximately 40% have kidney disease as a result of diabetes. According to the Washington State Department of Health, as many as 1 in 3 Washington residents have prediabetes — but many don’t know it.

November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. Join us as we highlight the vital role hospice and palliative care play in enhancing quality of life.

For Northwest Kidney Centers patient Louis Shaw, palliative care meant having a team that saw him as more than his diagnosis. After Louis began dialysis and was later diagnosed with cancer, our palliative care team supported him and his son Ian through every stage of his journey. They helped the family stay connected, guided important decisions, and made it possible for Louis to continue doing what brought him joy, like singing in the choir and spending time with his children. Even after Louis passed away in 2020, the team continued to check in with Ian to ensure he felt supported during his grief.

On the Today Show, actor Jesse Eisenberg shared that he’s donating his kidney to a stranger in 6 weeks as part of a kidney transplant chain. He also highlighted how the National Kidney Foundation’s voucher program helps protect his loved ones should they ever need a transplant.

With more than 90,000 people waiting for a kidney transplant, living donors like Jesse Eisenberg make a powerful difference.
