Happy National Volunteer Month!

Volunteers are often the quiet force behind so much of the good that happens in our communities, proving that even the simplest act of kindness or encouragement can spark a wave of positivity and inspiration in someone’s life.

From our independent living volunteers, who graciously dedicate their time to reading, making music, and accompanying their assisted living neighbors to programs around campus, to our civically engaged residents who get-out-the-vote and deliver hope with their community letter- and postcard-writing campaigns—thank you for being OUR spark and making our community shine even brighter. 💫

Andersen Construction presents on the development of our new West Tower each quarter, providing residents with a chance to learn, ask questions, and stay connected to the work shaping their community. This time, we were given a behind-the-scenes look at the complexities of building a 33-story tower in an earthquake zone on an urban site and the fascinating role 3D modeling plays in planning the upcoming phases of construction.

The Art Committee hosted its annual showcase, this time celebrating the art of photography! 📸 Our incredibly talented Horizon House residents, employees, and soon-to-be West Tower residents wowed us with their stunning prints and digital images. But that's not all! ✨ We also had a silly costume photo booth. As for who got their pictures taken, well, we wouldn’t have a clue! 🎭

We had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Marci Nemhauser and Development Manager Pam Reeve from the NW Parkinson's Foundation for “Parkinson’s: What You Need to Know Today.” As a local, independent non-profit serving people impacted by Parkinson’s in the Northwest since 1998, they shared insights, supportive strategies, and resources for individuals living with the disease, as well as their caregivers and loved ones. With the latest advancements in precision medicine, we’re moving beyond merely masking symptoms toward the ultimate goal of finding a cure for Parkinson’s.

Meet Myrtle Edwards, Seattle City Councilmember. Parks champion. Horizon House founder.

At 61, she ran for office and won decisively. She negotiated the land for Gas Works Park, championed the Seattle Center, and helped transform Seattle from an industrial "pioneer town" into one of America's most livable cities. But her most personal achievement? Creating Horizon House—a retirement community where a life of growth, purpose, and meaning can continue long after a career ends.

Discover the story of Horizon House's original independent thinker.

When Myrtle Edwards and her husband became residents 35 and 36 of Horizon House in 1961, she wasn't just moving into a new home. She was realizing a vision born from a problem that had haunted her for years. Her mother had struggled with dementia. As primary caregiver, Myrtle faced…

Not only is Horizon House situated in the vibrant First Hill neighborhood in downtown Seattle, but we also offer a variety of shuttle services and group outings to popular parks and attractions. Just last week, we spotted orcas at Alki Beach; this week, we enjoyed the beauty of Golden Gardens Park, with a pit stop at Dick’s Drive-In. Where to next? Snoqualmie Falls!

Located in downtown Seattle, Horizon House offers a unique culture of lifelong learning and arts, plus independent living, assisted living, and memory support.

Residents are always delighted to share their talents and creativity to educate and inspire others. 😊 This week, we had the pleasure of learning about the art of hand-cut wooden jigsaw puzzles from Carol, a longtime member of the Woodshop Committee who has been crafting one-of-a-kind puzzles for over 50 years. 🧩 She shared fascinating details about the puzzle-making process and even gave us a fun demonstration of hand-cutting techniques using her vintage Delta Rockwell saw! 🪚✨

On January 26, we broke ground on the West Tower—33 stories, 198 residences, opening 2029. One future West Tower depositor, number 133 on our waitlist, said it best: "It wasn't real until today."

Our latest blog shares three voices from that day and what happens when a three-year promise becomes tangible.

How three voices from our January 26 ceremony captured the moment concept crossed into reality On January 26, we broke ground on the West Tower—a beautiful 33-story tower that will add 198 new senior living apartment homes to our urban retirement community in Seattle's First Hill neighborhood. As part of Horizon House’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, we’ve launched our very own car share program in partnership with ZEV co-op! 🚗🍃

This initiative provides our residents with convenience, flexibility, and independence—without the hassle of car ownership. Plus, it's a big step towards reducing our community's environmental impact and building a sustainable future.

Thank you to the Resident Environment Committee, Associate Director of Operations, Brian Byers, and Zero Emission Vehicle Cooperative for making this possible!
