Articulation disorders occur when children struggle to produce specific speech sounds, affecting clarity and intelligibility.

Phonological disorders involve difficulties in recognizing and organizing sound patterns, making speech hard to understand despite correct articulation in isolation. An example of this is a child that is able to accurately say the sound “s” but says “tame” for “same”.

Early identification and targeted intervention can significantly improve your child’s communication skills.

Meet Rachel Connelly, our speech language pathologist assistant. Rachel has spent over a decade working with children, from Pre-K and elementary schools to pediatric clinics. She brings a deep belief in the power of communication and how it helps kids connect, build relationships, and thrive. Rachel has a clinical focus in the following areas: speech sound production delays and disorders, social communication, and receptive and expressive language delays and disorders. She also leads our Connect & Play social groups. Parents and kids love Rachel’s calm, thoughtful approach — and we’re so lucky to have her on the SST team!

So long, Pookie! Here, Chris says goodbye to Pookie the Panda, one of our popular weighted stuffies, as it heads out to live in the clinic. Sometimes kids need a little extra “grounding” to stay focused or comfortable. A weighted stuffed animal feels cozy, calming, and safe, and it blends right into play. 👋 🐼

Shared book reading (a fancy term for reading a story together and talking about the pictures, ideas, and sounds) is a valuable speech therapy tool. With The Lost Christmas, we targeted working memory, sustained attention, describing, and lots of /s/ and /l/ practice. A huge thank you to the Seattle American German School for welcoming us into their space and partnering with us to support these amazing learners. We love working with local schools!
