What is the MIDAS Score?

The Migraine Disability Assessment MIDAS Questionnaire is a simple, standardized tool used by doctors and patients to measure the impact of migraines on a person’s daily life.

How is the MIDAS score calculated?

The score is the sum of days missed or days with limited productivity from three areas over a 3-month period:

- Missed work or school
- Missed household chores
- Missed social, family, or leisure activities
- Limited productivity at work or school
- Limited productivity in household chores

Understanding Your MIDAS Grade

The MIDAS score ranges from 0 to 270.
The score is categorized into 4 grades of disability:

- Grade I (Little or no disability): 0–5
- Grade II (Mild disability): 6–10
- Grade III (Moderate disability): 11–20
- Grade IV (Severe disability): 21+

A score of 11 or higher indicates a moderately limiting disability that may warrant a discussion about management approaches and treatment selection with a doctor.

What should a migraine diary include?

Information about your migraine will help you and your doctor to treat your condition. When starting your diary keep it as simple as possible and record basic information. If your diary is simple - the more likely you to keep it up. Use your diary to record every migraine or other headache you get. The most important information for the diary is the following:

Date and time. Record the days and what time of day attack started. As well as the duration of the attack.

Pain severity. Record the severity of headache or other symptoms severity.

Symptoms. Track other symptoms you experience alongside the headache.

Medication. Note what medication you took and weather it help or not.

Possible triggers. Note relevant events that might cause your attack - what you were doing, what you ate or drank.

Traffic light of Headache is the system of three tiers. It based on the associated disability of the migraine attack:

🟢 I can still GO headache - green light. Meaning I can function - “I have a headache but I’m going to work” or “I’m going to look after my kids”

🟡 I have to SLOW down headache - yellow light. This tier means - I’m slowed, i.e. “I better take it easy or I might not make that meeting later. I have to be cautious.”

🔴 I have to STOP headache - red light. I cannot function - i.e. “I have to stop what I’m doing, go home from work, go lie down, I can’t look after my children”
