Each year, we honor leaders from the community who have made a significant impact on the well-being of children and families experiencing foster care. The Walt Zabriskie award honors the legacy of an incredible man who served children and families through Amara through his countless hours of volunteering as an advocate for families, as Board Treasurer, supporter, networker, community builder, and more.

We are thrilled to present the 2021 Walt Zabriskie Award to Cynthia Isabell! Cynthia spent her career walking alongside kids, youth, and families. During her 34 years as a social worker at Amara, she made a remarkable impact on countless youth and families.

She began her time at Amara supporting teen parents by teaching parenting skills and providing family support so they could continue their education and thrive. She was able to connect with and empower youth so beautifully – they felt her genuine care and support. As an example of that, Amara got a call one day from a young woman looking for Ms. Cynthia, wanting to let her know that she was about to graduate from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a degree in Human Services and Sociology. It had been a few years since this young woman’s family had moved away and been in contact with Cynthia, but she called anyway to let Cynthia know that she made a difference in her life.

Over the years, Cynthia transitioned roles as a Foster Care Specialist where she supported numerous foster and adoptive families as they navigated the joys and challenges of parenting and building relationships with the parents and families of children in their care. Cynthia shared that one of the beautiful things about working at Amara was that once she was assigned to a foster family, she got to stay with them throughout their entire fostering journey building deep relationships.

Cynthia, we are so grateful for your many years at Amara and most importantly for your unwavering commitment to kids and families. Congratulations!

For 20 year, the partnership of Labor Tubs Northwest delivered sturdy and beautiful AquaDoula birthing tubs to homes, hospitals, and birthing centers throughout the Greater Seattle area. Our comprehensive service included on-call 24-hour delivery, set-up and phone support, as well as tub removal. Our deliveries and pick ups officially ended in July 2019 and the partnership dissolved.
For the final 6 years April did all the tub deliveries solo.

After a planned one-year break to refresh, April is back doing DIY tub rentals with the option of a well-distanced clean up with mask at your home.

Hello all! I am back in Seattle and have been rehabbing a shoulder.

I have Aqua Doulas to rent out for DIY. I will disinfect them when they are returned, or can pick up, clean, and pack by appointment following the apointment with prior agreement. Looking forward to getting back to seeing some lovely baby photos!

Hello all! Zdravo!

I plan to begin delivering tubs--by appointment only-- for home births beginning June 1. Probably for due dates beginning June 14th, unless folks are expecting a late baby and would be comfortable having it delivered closer to their due date. These would be "full service" deliveries with clean up, packing, and pick up of the tubs after the birth.

Self-service options will also be available.

Of course, since I made that plan, COVID19 changed life as we knew it everywhere on the planet! I am currently in Montenegro, where I planned to stay until late May. I am fine and healthy, in a small town in the center of the country, which has closed its borders and imposed quarantine/self-isolation measures. Whether or not I'll actually make it back to Seattle in May as planned depends on the course of the virus.

So~~who knows!?? I may be seeing you in my role as "water goddess" again during the months I spend in Seattle each year! I'll also be available as a fill-in for others who deliver tubs.

I've put it off and put it off, but retirement is here!

As much as I loved delivering tubs these past 20 years, I no longer want to wear a pager!

I'm called now to help sterilize cats in the Balkans through our new 501(c)(3), Kotor Kitties, paddle a kayak, travel with my dear friends, the Cronies, drink beer on a beach in Montenegro (hope you haven't forgotten, Relja and Nešo), take more interesting classes, read more books, and dig in the garden without worry about how dirty I'll get!
