Jack Kastensmidt worked as a civil engineer and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961 to 1963, stationed in California.
One of the most memorable moments from his service was when high-ranking leaders — a lieutenant general, a colonel, and a general — all asked him to stay in the Air Force. “That really meant something,” Jack recalls. He also made a few good friends during his time in service. The lesson that stayed with him? “Discipline.” It’s a value that shaped how he approached life and work after the military.
To Jack, Veterans Day is personal.“It’s a day to honor people who have served in the military.” His advice to the younger generation: “Respect your officers — and know that it is a privilege to serve our country.”
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!!

He fondly remembers the travel and friendships he made during his service. "Meeting people from all walks of life was the highlight," he says. The most lasting lesson from his military experience? "Discipline. It shapes your life and stays with you long after you leave the service. It teaches you how to live better every day."For Glenn Hoehler, Veterans Day is a time of pride and reflection. "It makes me proud and happy to rememberthose who served." His advice to the next generation entering the military? As the oldest of several siblings, Charles Schroering began his
journey working for William Wrigley Jr. in Louisville, Kentucky.
Inspired by an uncle who served, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps,
serving for seven years. He fought in both Japan and the Korean
War, stationed in North Carolina and California.
One of his most memorable experiences was serving alongside
his fellow Marines.
“Having my men by my side—that bond meant
everything,
” he says. Through his service, he formed lifelong
friendships and learned values that shaped him.
“Discipline and
loyalty stayed with me throughout my life. The military also
taught me to be an early riser—something that still defines my
routine today.

To him, Veterans Day is a time to stop and show respect to the
fallen. His message to the next generation:
“Be grateful for the benefits and freedoms this country gives us—
and honor those who served before you.
