As the Seattle Vipassana Hall winds up its operations, we wanted to share our gratitude for nine years of sitting together on Lake Union in Seattle. Hundreds of students made use of the hall over the years, many already well-established students, many students just getting started in their practice, and many students coming back to their practice after years away.

May all this Dhamma practice serve you well. And thank you for contributing to the community of old students through your presence at SVH events, from Friday night potluck sittings, to "sitting in the New Year" with late night meditations on December 31.

We are fortunate indeed to live in a time when the Dhamma is available to us, when the teachings of the Buddha are still extant in the world. From time to time, where we practice, when and with whom we practice, may change. But the practice itself is what's most important. If we keep practicing, the place will arise, community will arise, wisdom will arise.

The larger community of Dhamma Kuñja, of which SVH has been a part, very much carries on. Though courses had to be suspended through the pandemic, plans are actively underway for opening the center again. Best wishes for the continuity of your efforts, and for your growth in dhamma.

With metta,
SVH Hosts

Dear Seattle area meditators,

Amongst the many things that are changing in our lives right now, sadly, it is time to close down the Seattle Vipassana Hall. Between the ongoing expenses, the relentless city traffic, and now the pandemic, SVH is not sustainable. Another factor is the remarkable success of the Virtual Group Sittings. Most days, morning and evening, there are more meditators sitting together on those Zoom calls than ever joined in at SVH. No doubt in the future, if the community of old students wants another hall, one will arise.

The timing of this closure comes one year into a five year lease. As we are responsible for the rent until a new occupant can be found, we ask that if you know or hear of anyone who might be interested in renting the space, please have them contact Dean at jdtgen@gmail.com.

Thank you to all the many people who helped make SVH possible these past nine years. To those of you who served directly at the hall, and you who contributed your dana, either financially, or with the hard work of developing your paramis, may you enjoy the fruits of those many merits. And may you carry on, and continue to walk the path of dhamma.

Things: Last chance to reclaim Lost&Found items

6 Coats (women’s, men’s, and children’s)

If you think any of these items might be yours, contact Dean at jdtgen@gmail.com by June 19. After that, they will be donated.

Be Happy! Stay safe. And help keep everyone else safe as well.

With metta,

Dear Seattle Area Meditators,

We hope that you, and your family and friends, are healthy and staying connected through these extraordinary times. As meditators, such times offer both an appreciation of what strength our development in Dhamma already provides us, as well as a unique opportunity to deepen our practice of Vipassana. In service of those efforts, as hopefully you have heard, we now have the option of meditating together online. A system has been sponsored both through Dhamma Kunja (WA) and Dhamma Mahavana (CA) to provide our West Coast community with four options per day to sit together with an AT. A number of these sittings will be broadcast locally here in Seattle, many from SVH. We hope that working together in this way, we will persevere in walking this path, and support each other through whatever difficulties lie ahead.

With best wishes and much metta,
SVH Hosts

Assistant Teacher-Led Virtual Group Sittings - Morning & Evening

In these unprecedented times, the 'reality as-it-is' presents us as Vipassana meditators with unusual challenges and opportunities to put our practice into practice. Many of us find ourselves with a greater need to connect with the larger Vipassana meditation community during the worldwide absence of courses, Vipassana halls, and local group sittings. The situation has inspired us to stretch beyond the bounds of our usual format by offering Assistant Teacher (AT) led virtual group sittings. Below you'll find the information you need to connect for daily group sittings remotely, as well as the guidelines.

As an old student, you are invited to participate in these virtual group sittings. These sittings are now offered every day at 7 am, 8 am, 6 pm and 7 pm PDT. After the hour sitting and Metta meditation, the ATs may take a few minutes to answer meditation-related questions. Even if you don't have a question, you are welcome to stay on to listen.

Guidelines for Virtual Group Sittings

Virtual group sittings are open to those who have taken a 10-day course with S.N. Goenka or one of his assistant teachers.
Participants at virtual group sittings should practice only the meditation technique taught by S.N. Goenka.
Please dial in 3-5 minutes before the virtual group sitting begins.
You may sit part-time. The host mutes everyone once meditation starts so meditators will hear only the audio and nothing else.
Please observe noble silence during the virtual group sittings.
No other chanting or praying audio files should be played.
Virtual group sittings are not a forum to network, solicit or share contact information, or engage in discussion.
How to join the Virtual Group Sittings

Virtual group sittings will use the Zoom meeting app. To join the group sitting you will need to use Zoom and if you haven't used it before, please sign on 5-10 minutes early to make sure that you are set up before the group sitting starts.

Some ATs may offer a few minutes of Q&A at the end of the virtual group sittings. At the end of the group sitting, if you'd like to ask a question, type it as a message in Zoom Chat. Your question will be received privately.

You may complete the registration form here to get information on how to join these sittings: http://www.bit.ly/virtualregistration.

Dear Seattle Area Old Students,

As we all navigate our way through this uncharted space, may we enjoy the fruits of the practice we already have established, and may we use this unusual time to develop further in dhamma. As with any storm, practicing now has its own special benefits.

As meditators who have sat together in the NW, know that others will be meditating with you. Many of us will be keeping the same schedule as we have had for sometime at SVH, including today from 9:00 am to noon. Join in if you can.

Also, there are world wide virtual group sitting at many times of the day. The link below will take you to the sign up page.

Dear Seattle Area Old Students,

We hope you are all staying healthy in these challenging times.

Following current COVID-19 recommendations and an abundance of caution, all official Seattle-area Vipassana group activities are temporarily suspended. This includes all upcoming group sittings and one-day courses.

Additional news will be forthcoming. This is effective immediately and for a duration to be determined later.

We wish you well, and hope your Vipassana practice is a good support to you through this experience. May your knowing that so many others are meditating on their own help to strengthen your efforts. You may participate in virtual group sittings through the following link:
