Yesterday, March 31st, marks Transgender Visibility Day—a day to celebrate the resilience, diversity, and existence of transgender and gender-expansive individuals. While visibility is vital, it is not an end in itself. As highlighted in recent and historical events across the globe, visibility without safety risks exposing individuals to harassment, discrimination, and harm. True progress requires moving beyond visibility toward genuine safety, belonging, and dignity for all trans and non-binary people.

Today, March 31st, marks Transgender Visibility Day—a day to celebrate the resilience, diversity, and existence of transgender and gender-expansive

In places with visible non-monogamous communities—such as Seattle—it’s increasingly common to hear people talk openly about polyamory, ENM dating apps, or local social groups. That visibility can spark questions about what these relationships actually look like in practice.

In this post, we’ll walk through what ethical non-monogamy is, explore common forms such as open relationships and polyamory, and discuss how therapy can help individuals and couples build trust, communication, and clarity as they navigate these relationship structures.

Curious about open relationships, polyamory, or ethical non-monogamy? Learn the different relationship structures, common myths, and how therapy can support communication and connection.

A Therapist’s Toolkit: How Therapists Use Somatic Awareness to Support Trauma Recovery

Kink‑Affirming Therapy in Seattle: Exploring Desire, Consent, and Connection

Curiosity about kink or B**M can be a powerful part of intimacy and self‑exploration, yet many people feel confused, ashamed, or afraid of judgment when they start to notice these interests. Our culture often sends mixed messages about s*xuality, framing kink as risky or unhealthy rather than recognizing it as a valid form of expression rooted in consent and connection. That’s where kink-affirming therapy steps in.

At Steffen Counseling Services, we believe that exploring kink can be a healthy aspect of relational and personal growth when approached with intention, communication, and safety. In our kink‑affirming therapy, we work with individuals and couples to unpack beliefs about desire, understand how kink dynamics work psychologically, and strengthen the skills needed to navigate consensual intimacy.

Explore kink-affirming therapy in Seattle. Steffen Counseling Services' s*x therapists are here to help you to navigate B**M, consent, and intimacy.

What is nontraditional grief?

When most people think of grief, they picture mourning a clear, traditional loss—like the death of a loved one. Yet grief often appears in less recognized ways. Nontraditional grief, sometimes called disenfranchised grief, happens when we experience a loss that others may not view as significant or worthy of mourning. These very real experiences can carry deep emotional pain, even when the world doesn’t seem to notice.

Explore how therapy helps with nontraditional grief like pet loss, complicated family relationships, or invisible forms of mourning in Seattle, Washington.

We Are the New Middle-Aged Women

The following is an excerpt from the blog series “A Few Things I Noticed While Trying to Improve Myself” by Mollie Player.

Recently, while reading various reactions to Elizabeth Gilbert’s latest (super controversial) book, All the Way to the River, I came across a post that subtly disregarded her readership as “fed up middle-aged women.” It was a throwaway comment and one that I hear regularly. Middle-aged women are, apparently, quite unhappy.

I am forty-seven now, and though I can’t speak for all of us in this age bracket, I can say that this has not been my experience.

Mollie Player explores how the new middle-aged women are redefining wellness, relationships, and self-growth. Learn how this generation of women is prioritizing mental health, emotional balance, and purposeful living in today’s world.

Our Story

“I view counseling/psychotherapy as a collaborative way for anyone who feels stuck to create movement in their life. Therapy can help clients increase connections and intimacy, develop communication skills, explore the connection between their past and present, and find balance. Use your therapist as a tool to examine your perceptions, assumptions, values, goals, thought/communication patterns, and above all, your relationships. I enjoy working with individuals and couples on the relationships that work best for them. I take a s*x positive and LGTBQ supportive stance as I work with individual clients and couples. My childhood experience growing up between two households, one liberal LGTBQ and the other conservative Christian, lends itself to a unique therapeutic perspective built on firsthand experience. As I focused my graduate research on LGBTQ couples, I have both personal and practical experience in this area.”
