FROM THE HEART:
The definition of the word caregiver is "a family member or paid helper who regularly looks after a sick, elderly or disabled person."
This definition does not begin to define the relationship of a caregiver in the client's life.

Sometimes a caregiver is a family member and sometimes it is someone who is not known to the client until they begin caring for them.

There is something that most care givers have in common and that is COMPASSION. The definition of compassion is "a feeling of wanting to help someone who is sick, hungry, in trouble, etc.". Compassion comes from the heart. It is this compassion that makes the best caregivers. Not only are they doing a good job of caring for their client or family member, but they are doing it from the heart.

The definition of the word TRUST is, "belief that someone or something is reliable, good, honest, effective, etc.". Many relationships are based on trust. This trust bond is important in the caregiver/client relationship. The client must trust the caregiver completely, not only with their care, but because the caregiver is in the home of the client.

COMPASSION and TRUST are two very important words in the description of the word caregiver. Caregiver skills can be learned, but compassion and trust "skills" come from deep inside.

A new version of the word caregiver should be: "caregiver - a compassionate and trustworthy person who desires to help a child or a sick, elderly or disabled person live their lives to the best of their abilities."
