Some of my earliest and fondest memories as a kid was spending lots of time in the garden and among nature with my great grandmother. Fast forward to this trimester of midwifery school, I was tasked again with dipping my numb thumb and growing herbs for my ā€œherbology for midwivesā€ class and when I say that it has been such an adventure to keep them alive and growing during the weird summer weather that was thrown at us in Washington 😰 Nonetheless my 10 herbs and I have been thriving and it inspired me to grow more.

Introducing ā€œMukisa’s Midwife Gardenā€
• Fenugreek
• Oats
• Fennel
• Calendula
• Red Raspberry leaf
• Thistle
• Yarrow
• Nettles
• Chamomile
• Lemon balm

I got into MCU and I’m going to be an avenger!!!

Wait let me try that again. I got into MCU and I’m going to be a midwife.

This week I picked my classes for my first quarter at the Midwives College of Utah and couldn’t help but to take in all the emotions that came with it. Mostly feelings of feeling reaffirmed that this is where I belong- Something’s been pulling me to this work, pushing me to ask questions, inspiring me to continue.

Through the amazing postpartum training from ,I listened to speak about how so many of us doulas and birth workers are called into this work and it resonated in a whole new way.

I’m the daughter of Lucy, granddaughter of Mary, great granddaughter of Evangeline, a Certified Nurse Midwife.

This is my ancestor calling…

I love the opportunities of getting to learn from nurses and them learning from us, doulas.

At my most recent birth, I showed a nurse how to do the flying cowgirl and how great it works to open the pelvis while providing rest for parents with epidurals.

Who relates??⁣

⁣
I learned a lottttttt about fetal monitoring & high risk. And next to zero on how to facilitate physiologic birth and how to help my patients cope!!⁣

ā€œDon’t cut them! Don’t cut themā€

That was the outcry of advocacy.

Hours after this, a phone call came through with older siblings on the other line. They excitedly sent messages of love and lots of I miss yous but it was in the midst of the adrenaline slowing down and the room clearing out when I heard

ā€œI’m happy the baby has theirs, me and (other sibling) never got to keep oursā€

And then it all made sense. This wasn’t just self advocacy from a parent who gave birth, this was self advocacy at its core. That one day, they will have the choice to decide what to do with their body.

This was self advocacy in a parent realizing they’ve never been offered the option with their other children.

In this space, their birthing space, this was finding their voice.

✨The highlight of my night/day was hearing that my overnight postpartum baby was in such a good mood after I left and remained that way that mom and dad were able to get dressed up and have brunch and the rest of his day was AMAZING✨

BRB while I cry 🄺

I’ve been learning and exploring a whole new creative side of myself. Learning to use my hands to create to art and pushing aside thoughts of self doubt that the finished product would be lesser. But I’m trying and I’m having fun and I’m happy with whatever I end up with 😃
