“Some women will instinctively push before their cervix is fully dilated. This is often treated as a complication, and a common approach is to encourage the woman to stop pushing due to fear that cervical damage will occur. However, there is no evidence to support this concern. Two studies examined pushing before full dilatation and found that between 20-40 per cent of women experienced an ‘early urge to push’ (Borrelli et al 2013; Downe et al 2008). Borrelli et al (2013)”

A little bit about Sahra!

Sahra trained to become a Birth doula with Simkin center and Allied Health Vocations at Bastyr in February 2017. She is currently a Certified Doula through DONA International. She holds an Associates Degree and is currently a student at the University of Washington majoring in Healthcare Leadership. She felt the need to become a Doula, when she gave birth to her daughter in 2015. Sahra became inspired by the importance of having a doula by her side during her pregnancy and labor. She feels greatly blessed to have the opportunity to serve 53 families and the birth community. And help empower others to make the choices that are right for them. Her philosophy is to guide her clients towards their satisfying birth experience, free of judgment and full of support. Sahra has experience working with both first time parents, parents with more than one child, un-medicated and medicated births and VBAC. Sahra speaks some Oromo and Somali. In her free time, Sahra spends time with her husband and two children, volunteers at Harborview Medical Center and loves going for a walk at local parks or drink coffee at different coffee shops.
