Spirits love electricity. It’s one of their favorite languages, and they recognize a good conductor when they see one.

I was reminded of this in a big way after facilitating a business blessing in one of Pioneer Square’s oldest buildings (in Seattle). By the time we finished, I’d been holding so much energy for so long that my own electrical field was completely overcharged. I blew my car’s starter turning the key in the parking lot. Got home, flipped the first light switch and the bulb immediately blew. Second switch. Blown. Third. Blown. It wasn’t until I’d soaked in a sea salt bath that I finally felt all of that activated current release.

Spirit communication moves through whatever conducts it most easily. For them, electricity is obvious and they will interact with lights, phones, batteries, engines. If something flickers or dies at a meaningful moment, it’s worth checking in intuitively to notice who might be trying to reach you.

I have so many precious memories of teaching over the years. There’s nothing quite like a roomful of people who are just as fascinated by the nonordinary as I am. And who are ready to jump into all things psychic, metaphysical, and spiritual.

Years ago, a group of us spent a sweltering summer hanging out in a haunted old schoolroom in Seattle, where I was sharing what I knew about psychic development at the time. One evening, I walked in with an electric kettle, some loose tea leaves, and a dozen teacups.

We spent the next two hours reading each other’s tea leaves and not only had a blast, but were also able to pull out some very evocative results. The exercise really brought home the divination possibilities that lie within almost any pattern, random or otherwise. Spirit is always showing us signs. All we need to do is shift our focus and open our intuitive senses.

Here’s a simple way to read tea leaves that you can use to warm up your intuition:

🫖 Brew a cup of loose-leaf tea.
☺️ Drink slowly, with attention.
💫 When finished, gently swirl the cup three times.
☕️ Turn it upside down on a saucer and let it rest.

🍂 When you turn it back over, notice the shapes, lines, and empty spaces left by the leaves.
😌 Don’t analyze—just notice what you feel and what the images remind you of.

🤎 There’s no right answer.

🔮 This is about listening, seeing, feeling, and tuning in with your inner senses.

🌟 You might be surprised by what you “get”! Just because a practice is simple doesn’t mean it isn’t powerful.

I work with many clients long-term (some for over twenty years now) who choose to return throughout the year for psychic guidance, energy healing, and ongoing spiritual and personal growth. For many, this work is a practice, not a one-time experience.

Over time, I noticed how helpful it can be to have sessions already planned, for consistency and for staying engaged with the connection, and for integrating and sustaining progress.

There's a tendency to reach "up" for spiritual support from our guides, angels, and ancestors, and we forget to look around at the natural world which is alive with allies and messages.

An animal that gets your attention might be offering its medicine with a new course of action, a powerful quality to develop, or an answer hiding in plain sight.

When I look at this snake wound around its branch, I see Asclepius's rod (an ancient symbol of medicine and healing). The tree branch represents nature's medicine. The snake symbolizes the wisdom of shedding what no longer serves.

Fun fact: This symbol is often confused with the Caduceus, Hermes's winged staff with two snakes. Printers used it as their mark on books, including medical texts. In the early 1900s, the U.S. Army Medical Corps mistakenly adopted it as their medical symbol.

December’s solstice. In the north, it’s the longest night/shortest day. In the south, it’s the shortest night/longest day.

Mother Earth tilts and half of us lean into darkness, while half of us bathe in the light.

How do we honor this pivotal time?

With ceremony, family gatherings, fires, feasting, poetry, dancing, remembrance, rest, patience, forgiveness…

What remains constant, perhaps, is our heart-filled instinct to gather and tell stories. And to trust that the light will return…

…because it always does.
