Everyone’s journey to sobriety is unique, but understanding the general steps along the path to recovery can help you or a loved one understand where you are and prevent you from getting discouraged.

The Stages of Change Model outlines the steps people in recovery commonly take throughout the addiction recovery process. They begin with stage one, which is precontemplation. This stage is when the person feels the effects of their addiction such as financial issues, struggling relationships, and using substances to deal with stress. They may also notice physical symptoms like shakiness, sweating, weight gain or loss, or sleep issues. It sometimes takes a big event or “hitting rock bottom” for someone to recognize that they have a problem.

The next stages occur after someone has realized they have a substance abuse problem and it is negatively impacting their life. They are:
➡Contemplation
➡Preparation
➡Action
➡Maintenance
➡Transcendence

If you or a loved one are sober, you have likely been asked a few questions about why you made this choice, especially in social settings where drinking is involved. The questions may include “Did you have a problem? What made you quit? So like, you’re NEVER going to drink again?” They may be followed up with “Oh, so you’re sober? I’m sorry to hear that!” But there is never any reason to apologize for being sober.

The decision to get sober is not something to ever be sorry about, because for many people it means they get to experience an entirely new and positive outlook on life. Not everyone will understand this, and that’s ok, but it’s important to always remember to stand firm in the decision, no matter how anyone else feels about your sobriety.

A large amount of research has been conducted on drug use and addiction treatment to understand how effective different treatment options are. One of the most authoritative sources on treatment statistics in the US is the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an annual nationwide survey that tracks trends in alcohol use, drug abuse, and mental health among Americans. Here are some interesting statistics collected by the survey when it comes to drug use and treatment in the U.S.:

- Nearly 25 million Americans over the age of 11 reported that they were currently using illicit drugs.
- Approximately 2.5 million Americans who needed treatment for drug or alcohol addiction got the specialized help they needed.
- Over 18% of Americans over age 17 had a form of mental illness.
- Over 10% of American teens struggled with depression.
- Over 3% of American adults had a form of mental illness combined with a substance abuse disorder.

The survey also discovered that the most commonly abused drug in the United States is ma*****na.

Did you know that alcohol is one of the most commonly ingested substances in the world, including the U.S.? Unfortunately, it is also often abused. Many individuals will have their first alcoholic beverage before entering high school and can be unaware of the dangers of excessive alcohol use. It’s important to understand these dangers and the statistics and facts surrounding alcohol use among different demographics.

Alcoholism can affect anyone, but some people are at a higher risk of developing a substance abuse disorder based on either their gender, employment status, or other factors. For example, men are more likely to be current and excessive drinkers than women. Also, people that are unemployed are 87% more likely to report heavy alcohol use and 29% more likely to develop alcohol dependence than people that are employed.
