👏 Congratulations to Dr. Herman and the Hudson Regional Health Secaucus team on their first Spur case!

A Spur case involves using a specialized limb-saving procedure to help keep small, below-the-knee arteries open and to restore blood flow.

This milestone reflects our team’s commitment to advanced vascular care and continuous innovation. HRH is proud to raise the standard for limb-saving treatment across our health system.

Here are tips from Dr. Peter Tsenovoy, Chief of Cardiology at Hudson Regional Health, to stay safe with shoveling after a heavy snowstorm:

Know Your Risk: If you’re over 45 - and especially over 65 - have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol, use extreme caution - or better yet - ask for help shoveling from family or neighbors.

The intense upper-body exertion for those with cardiac history can redirect blood flow away from the heart—a phenomenon known as coronary steal—and significantly increase the risk of a heart attack.

Warm-Up First: Like any other strenuous activity, like going to the gym, warm up your muscles with stretching first.

Use caution when shoveling: Shovel smaller amounts of snow at a time, and bend your knees so not to put extra stress on the back. Lifting heavy loads of snow can be more strenuous on the heart.

Don’t overdo it: When shoveling if you experience chest pain, any shortness of breath, heart palpitations, dizziness, or any type of discomfort, stop and seek medical attention.
