𝐋𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬. Have you noticed that it takes a long time to get an appointment with a dermatologist and many other types of doctors? ⁣
𝐈𝐓’𝐒 𝐆𝐎𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐎 𝐆𝐄𝐓 𝐀 𝐋𝐎𝐓 𝗪𝐎𝐑𝐒𝐄 ☠️𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞. For the past several years, Medicare has decreased reimbursements to physician practices. ⁣

➡️ Working during a crazy inflationary time where costs of running a business have skyrocketed?⁣
Yep, got a cut. ⁣

➡️ Working during a pandemic to keep patients safe and still provide the care that the public needed from us? Yep, got a cut.⁣

This has been a punch in the gut 😔⁣
⁣
While these cuts keep happening, costs are going up and up and it has become increasingly hard to run a business in healthcare. Many doctors have left healthcare and retired and shut their doors. Many doctors have transitioned away from participating with insurance companies because this is NOT sustainable. ⁣
And you may be thinking that it’s Medicare - that doesn’t impact me, only senior citizens. That means it will impact your parents or your family members who are aging. They won’t receive the care they deserve if there aren’t any doctors available. Medicare also sets the trend for other insurance companies, so if you have another type of insurance, this will happen to you too.⁣

𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬? 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐆𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐒. Our elected officials. Every year they vote on this issue, and every year in the recent past there have been cuts. ⁣

Sharing some sad news. Today we said goodbye to our boy Linus. This has been heavy on my heart for many months since he was diagnosed with cancer in January. We adopted him (and Merlot) in 2015 from a rescue group, and he quickly became one of the best things that ever happened to us. We will miss him so much ❤️ Right now we are heartbroken, but trying to remember all these happy memories we had with him.

One of my favorite ways to supplement my sun protection is wearing a wide-brimmed hat so that I get extra protection for my scalp, face, ears, and neck. ⁣⁣

Pro-tip: ⁣⁣
✅ make sure the brim is 3 inches wide or greater⁣⁣
✅ pick a hat that has a neck tie so it won’t fly off on a breezy day⁣⁣
✅ avoid straw or wicker hats that have holes⁣⁣
⁣⁣

✔️ Even one blistering sunburn during childhood can increase a person’s chance of developing melanoma later in life⁣
✔️ Melanoma may appear on the skin suddenly without warning, but also can develop from a pre-existing mole⁣
✔️ Some of the most common areas that melanoma develops include the upper back, torso, lower legs, & head and neck⁣
✔️ Melanoma is highly treatable when detected early⁣

November is 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡! What is the easiest step to ensuring your skin is at its healthiest level? Yes, that’s right - making sure you’ve had a recent skin cancer screening! Basal cell carcinoma as shown in the dermoscopy photo is the MOST common cancer in the United States. 1 in 5 Americans will get skin cancer during their life. ⁣

𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐈 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: ⁣

𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 - my youngest skin cancer patient was 18. He had a basal cell carcinoma on his shoulder. Another 22 year old patient of mine developed a squamous cell carcinoma on her nose. Unfortunately, skin cancer CAN impact children and teens. ⁣

“𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘯, 𝘴𝘰 𝘐’𝘮 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘦” ⁣
𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 - just take a look at the example here! This spot was only a few millimeters big and blended right in with sun damage spots. Most skin cancer looks like nothing to the average eye at early stages. Although it is important for you to keep a monthly watch over your skin at home, this does not replace having a skin cancer screening by your dermatologist. ⁣

“𝘔𝘺 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘤𝘬” ⁣
𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 - while it is great for a medical professional to look over the skin at your annual physical, board certified dermatologists are the ONLY physicians trained in skin cancer detection that spend 3 years in a dermatology residency doing so. ⁣
