Just another Thursday with a reminder to be Stigma Free!

Stigma related to mental health and HIV continues to be fueled by lack of awareness, harmful stereotypes, and judgment rooted in past misconceptions. These negative attitudes can isolate individuals, delay diagnosis, and prevent people from seeking the care and support they deserve. When communities focus on understanding, accurate information, and inclusive language, they create safer environments where individuals feel valued and empowered. Reducing stigma is essential not only for emotional well-being but also for improving health outcomes and strengthening community trust.

Myth:
People with HIV or mental health conditions cannot fully participate in everyday life and should be treated differently.

Fact:
Individuals living with HIV or managing mental health conditions can lead full, successful lives with proper care. Modern treatment, therapy, and support systems allow people to maintain their health, pursue careers, build families, and remain active, contributing members of their communities.

Another Myth Busting Monday!

Myth:
Older adults are not at risk for HIV because they are less sexually active.

Fact:
Older adults can and do acquire HIV. Many remain sexually active, and lower prevention use, combined with age-related changes that can increase transmission risk, means HIV prevention and testing are just as important for older adults as for younger people.

It’s Friday!

We want to take a moment to highlight our desire to push forward HIV Education.
It is our goal to empower individuals to make informed decisions. Comprehensive education goes beyond just basic facts and addresses how to put knowledge into practical use.

We want to reaffirm our commitment to strengthening HIV education in our community. Our focus is on providing not only accurate information but also the practical skills individuals need to make informed, confident decisions about their health. By creating safe, stigma-free learning spaces and partnering with local organizations, we ensure our education is accessible, relevant, and empowering. Selma AIR remains dedicated to equipping our community with the knowledge and resources needed to protect themselves and one another.

Another Thursday, another day to remind you to be stigma free!

Stigma surrounding mental health and HIV often stems from misinformation, fear, and outdated beliefs. These biases create barriers that discourage people from seeking care, disclosing their needs, or accessing support systems. By promoting compassion, education, and respectful language, communities can help reduce discrimination and support individuals in receiving the services that improve their well-being. Ending stigma is not only socially responsible but vital for public health and human dignity.

Myth:
PWH or mental health conditions are “dangerous,” unstable, or unable to live normal lives.

Fact:
With proper treatment and support, PWH and/or mental health conditions can live long, healthy, productive, and thriving lives working, raising families, and contributing to their communities.
