The Saddle Light Center For Therapeutic Horsemanship

The Saddle Light Center For Therapeutic Horsemanship The Saddle Light Center for Therapeutic Horsemanship is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation located in Selma, TX at Retama Equestrian Center.

We help to build the self-esteem and quality of life for special needs individuals within Bexar County and surrounding areas through equine-assisted activities. As a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (P.A.T.H.) organization, we provide therapeutic horseback riding and hippotherapy to individuals with special needs within the San Antonio area with the goal of contributing positively to their cognitive, physical, emotional, and social well-being as to inspire them to accomplish things previously considered beyond their capabilities. Since our founding in 1991, through the generosity of our Sponsors and Volunteer workforce, we have grown from a few horses to a program that now provides equine therapy to 60 plus riders each week with a team of 13 horses. Through this program, the Saddle Light Center is committed to improving the self-esteem and quality of life of the disabled population in the San Antonio area. Our mission is to provide equestrian therapy for children, teenagers, and adults with neurological, orthopedic, learning, emotional or other disabilities. Our goal is to inspire our riders to accomplishments previously considered beyond their capabilities.

Hear from Dr. Brian Shoemake from the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society about the importance of acupuncture treatments on our horses. 🐎 These treatments help ensure their health and ability to truly help our riders with their therapy sessions. Another big thank you to IVAS for coming down and helping our horses and educating the community on the importance of Animal Acupuncture.

The International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) visited to provide acupuncture sessions for our therapy horses!
Watching the horses relax and respond was incredible — a reminder of how much they give and how important it is to care for them in return.
We loved learning from IVAS about how acupuncture helps with muscle tension, stress relief, and overall wellness. Thank you for sharing your expertise and compassion!

You may be able to double your donation to The Saddle Light Center with several matching fund opportunities throughout The Big Give 24-hour fundraising campaign. It takes a fast finger to click the donation button just at the right time, so practice your “quick clicking”!

The Big Give begins at 6 PM on Wednesday, September 17 and ends at 6 PM on Thursday, September 18.

This year, two long-time therapy horses within the herd family are retired and not able to provide therapy lessons, however the cost to care for them continues. With your Big Give donation to help cover the cost of care you can keep these long-time partners with the herd and provide the quality of care they deserve after their long therapy careers.
