Can't wait for tomorrow night!

For Winter Solstice, I did a ritual to set goals, dreams, and intentions for the new year. One of my "reach" goals was to have a show at a gallery and/or to submit a piece for a juried show. It wasn't until last year that I began to refer to myself as an artist. I was creative, artistic, and crafty, but I wasn't a "real" artist.

Within a week, my friend and mentor, Anne Strand, connected me with and it was on the books!

As I set out my work today, I felt my mother's spirit next to me. She was always my biggest fan and support. I know that I inherited my artistic skills from her. She never would have called herself an artist either, so I'm going to claim it for both of us. Fabric and thread are just as valid as artistic mediums as paint on canvas.

I have worked on this piece for almost 2 years. It was worth every stitch!

Each hexagon was hand stitched together. The fabrics were all dyed by me.

The Dresden Plate flowers were hand applique and embellished with a variety of embroidery stitched.

It was finished with machine free-motion quilting.

All roads lead to home.

I made this quilt in 2010 when I worked at a sewing machine dealer and quilt store. I was really into "modern" quilting and wanted to show customers how to use linen and solids and woven ribbon.

The rows of machine quilting on the linen remind me of the plowed farm fields surrounding my childhood farm. The bright solid roads don't meet in a neat grid. Many roads in life don't always take us directly from one place to the next.

Home has been a topic on my mind and heart lately.

I went home to Michigan to say goodbye to my Dad this summer. Now, we are in the process of saying goodbye to the home I grew up in.

When thinking about that home, I realized that it is still only a building. What made it home were the people who lived there. In particular, my Mom made it home. Her creativity and resourcefulness made it special.

The words have changed over the years - housewife, homemaker, to stay at-home mom. I think homemaker needs to make a comeback. No matter where a person works for a living, making a house a home is a vital calling. Homemaking isn't a gendered calling either.

Throughout my life, making a home a safe haven for myself and those I share space with has been a priority. From a tiny dorm room to my current dream home, I always come home to find myself.

Therapeutic stitching becomes art.

I was not able to get my ADHD medication for most of the summer. As a result, I needed to keep my hands and brain busy. My ADHD shows up as hyperfocus and dopamine searching. I see something I want to learn or try, and I don't quit until I get my fix.

I wanted to explore textured, monochromatic stitching. I intended to only use neutral colors. But my brain demands color!

These pieces of stitching were never supposed to become a large piece. However, as often happens, one thing leads to another and here we are.

This piece and other smaller works will be on display and available for purchase at my first solo gallery show at in Selma on February 5th.

Little details.

This piece has been in process for over a year. It began as a vague idea of making something inspired by the flowers in my garden. It has grown in unexpected ways. Just like a garden.
