“Get the inside scoop on Colon Health!💙

Today, I attended the Forrest Health Cancer Center in partnership with the Mississippi State Department of Health for a colon cancer awareness event. It was a tremendous success, with over 150 participants in attendance.

Guests had the opportunity to walk through the inflatable colon tunnel, where they learned about the progression from a healthy colon to one affected by cancer. Several vendors were also present, providing valuable information on ways to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.

I was honored to provide health screenings and connect with community members, emphasizing the importance of knowing your numbers and staying proactive about your health.

Last night’s screening event at Iglesia Pentecostal Bethel, a Hispanic community church in Hattiesburg, MS, was truly a great success! Health events and fairs play a vital role in educating communities and promoting overall wellness.

Church members were lined up to receive blood pressure checks and glucose screenings, showing a strong commitment to taking charge of their health. I distributed cases of water to attendees to encourage healthy habits.

A special thank you to Edith Fuentes, Interpreter/Community Health Worker, for her support in making this event successful.

Late post..

Hattiesburg Public Schools hosted their Tiger Grands Brunch on March 12th at Hattiesburg High School and it was truly a meaningful event!

As one of the guest speakers, I had the pleasure of presenting on Healthy Choices, Healthy Living. I shared information with the Tiger Grands about the five food groups and encouraged them to make healthier shopping choices and select nutritious snacks for their families. I also emphasized the importance of making their health a priority by knowing their numbers and understanding how obesity can impact the body and overall health.

In addition, Chief Latosha Myers delivered an impactful presentation on Protecting Children in the Digital Age, with a focus on cyberbullying and ways to keep children safe online.

Tiger Grands is a wonderful initiative that provides grandparents with education, resources, support, and meaningful connections, both with the school district, and with one another.

Another successful Senior Wellness Day hosted by Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative, Inc.(SEMRHI)! A total of 43 attendees participated in health screenings, enjoyed a few fun rounds of Bingo, received oral hygiene bags from SEMRHI Dental Clinic and were provided fresh vegetables boxes generously donated by the Mississippi SHINE Project.

We were also honored to have a representative from Guardant Health who provided valuable information on blood testing for colorectal cancer, helping to raise awareness about early detection and prevention.

In recognition of March as National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, we encouraged everyone to know the signs, stay informed, and keep up with regular screenings.

Today, I attended the Magee High School 2026 Reality Fair. Several vendors were on site, engaging 11th and 12th grade students in conversations centered around real life, real choices, and real skills. I had the opportunity to share information about community outreach and emphasize the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I reminded students that no matter which career path they choose, their health should always remain a priority. Eating nutritious foods and staying physically active are essential habits that will support them throughout their future careers.

Also in attendance was my colleague, Dr. Erica Newsome representing Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative, Inc.(SEMRHI) Behavioral Support Services.

Overall, it was a great and informative event.

I had a great time visiting different classrooms at G. W. Carver Elementary in Bassfield and reading The Cat in the Hat and Oh, the Places You’ll Go! to the students as part of their celebration of National Read Across America Day—also known as Dr. Seuss Day, traditionally observed on March 2nd in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday. 📚✨

Also in attendance were students from Jefferson Davis County High School, who joined in by reading to the children as well. It was beautiful to see older students inspiring and encouraging the younger ones through the power of literacy.

Each student received a snack from me for their participation in class as a small token of encouragement for being such great listeners and readers.

It was truly a day filled with smiles, imagination, and a love for reading!

Personal Trainer Damionh Jones organized a Senior Health Screening & Education Event for his Actively Prime Senior workout group. Alongside Edith Fuentes and the William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine students, I had the opportunity to conduct health screenings for the attendees.

Also in attendance was Charlotte Owens, insurance agent, who spoke with participants about Medicare Advantage plans and helped answer important coverage questions.

It was truly a great day of education, empowerment, and engagement! It’s always a pleasure serving our seniors and reminding them how important it is to know your numbers—blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, and BMI. Staying informed is a powerful step toward living a healthier, stronger life. 💙

Event 2..

The Laurel Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Economic Development Committee proudly presented “Financial Empowerment & Empowering Wellness: A Guide to Healthy Living & Heart Health” at Tender Touch Adult Care in Laurel, MS.

As one of the guest speakers, I had the honor of presenting on “A Guide to Healthy Living & Heart Health: Essential Elements of Senior Wellness,” highlighting how maintaining physical, mental, and emotional wellness allows individuals to live their best and healthiest lives. ❤️

Teresa Booth, retired Tower Loan Manager and current Career Coach, delivered an impactful session on Financial Empowerment, equipping attendees with valuable knowledge to strengthen their financial well-being.

The senior citizens were highly engaged and actively participated in the discussion. Each participant also received wellness bags from the Mississippi SHINE Project filled with facial tissue packs, hand sanitizer, mints, lip balm and stress balls as a reminder to prioritize self-care.

Moments like these reinforce the importance of education, prevention, and empowerment in our communities.

This morning, I served at Covington County’s Pearl River Valley Opportunity (PRVO) Food Box Distribution Day, where families received essential food boxes. I, Mississippi SHINE Project, was honored to donate fresh produce bags filled with fruit — because access to healthy food is not a luxury, it’s a necessity.

Food insecurity and chronic disease are deeply connected. When we put fresh, nutritious options directly into the hands of families, we are doing more than feeding people — we are fighting hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease one bag at a time.

Teacher Timeout: Vital Signs, Healthy Bites & Tobacco-Free Tips at Bay Springs High School was a great success!

I had the opportunity to conduct health screenings and encourage teachers and staff to prioritize their health. Annual check-ups and routine visits are vital to maintaining overall wellness and preventing chronic conditions. Knowing your numbers can truly make a difference!

Since February is Heart Health Month, we also emphasized the importance of heart-healthy habits, including monitoring blood pressure, staying active, and making nutritious food choices.

Pamela Lang-Prestage with the Mississippi Tobacco-Free Coalition provided valuable information on va**ng and its health risks. When educators are informed, they are empowered to educate their students and the community.
