Teacher Timeout: Vital Signs, Healthy Bites & To***co-Free Tips at Bay Springs High School was a great success!

I had the opportunity to conduct health screenings and encourage teachers and staff to prioritize their health. Annual check-ups and routine visits are vital to maintaining overall wellness and preventing chronic conditions. Knowing your numbers can truly make a difference!

Since February is Heart Health Month, we also emphasized the importance of heart-healthy habits, including monitoring blood pressure, staying active, and making nutritious food choices.

Pamela Lang-Prestage with the Mississippi To***co-Free Coalition provided valuable information on va**ng and its health risks. When educators are informed, they are empowered to educate their students and the community.

✨📚 Parent Universe 3.0 at Mt. Olive Attendance Center 🌎✏️

Tonight, we attended Parent Universe 3.0 at MOAC - Mt. Olive Attendance Center! The session focused on Literacy, Title I, and Mental Health, encouraging parents to come and experience a universe of literacy and learning.

I had the opportunity to present to parents about the importance of knowing their numbers—blood pressure, glucose, and overall health indicators—and emphasized that dental hygiene is imperative for their children’s overall health and academic success.

Megan Sly, Seminary Family Health Center Manager, and I also provided valuable information about Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative, Inc. (SEMRHI) clinics and school-based programs, ensuring families are aware of the healthcare resources available to them.

Parents were able to engage, gain helpful resources, and pick up their children’s progress reports. When families are informed and involved, students thrive! 💙

Today, I had the honor of attending the Xi Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Founder’s Day Celebration.💚💗

I was grateful for the opportunity to speak with attendees on the topic “New Year, New You: The 3 C’s of Health — Check. Change. Continue.” In addition to sharing this message, I also conducted health screenings and emphasized the importance of listening to your body and knowing your numbers.

Moments like these remind us that prioritizing our health is one of the greatest acts of self-care.

The Tooth Fairy is back! 🧚🏽‍♀️
Today, I had the pleasure of visiting the kindergarten students at Collins Elementary School to talk about the importance of brushing our teeth, eating healthy foods, and staying active with a little fun exercise. 💪🏽🍎🪥

The students were AMAZING listeners and asked great questions—one even asked how much money the tooth fairy gives when you lose a tooth… my answer? “Ask your parents!” 🤣🦷💰

To make it extra special, each child received a coloring activity sheet and a toothbrush to help keep those smiles bright at home! 😁

Moments like these remind me why community outreach matters! 💙

Late post…

On Saturday, Pearl River Community College (PRCC) hosted its 19th Annual Women’s Health Symposium, welcoming 300+ attendees. The event focused on empowering women to make healthy lifestyle changes, improve overall wellness, and promote self-esteem.

Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative, Inc.(SEMRHI) were on site promoting the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP), which serves low-income, uninsured, and underinsured women ages 21–64 across Mississippi. Additionall, the women were encouraged to know their numbers and understand the risks of high blood pressure and diabetes, while highlighting the importance of healthy eating and physical activity for overall health.

Mississippi continues to face high female mortality rates due to conditions such as heart disease, breast cancer, and stroke, highlighting the importance of education, prevention, and access to care.

Empowering the next generation of leaders! 🐺💙🤍
The 2026 4th Annual Leadership Summit at Co-Lin Simpson County Center welcomed over 100 student leaders from area high schools for a day of learning, growth, and connection. The event kicked off with an inspiring keynote speaker, followed by breakout sessions focused on essential leadership qualities—Insight, Integrity, Courage, and Agility.

I had the opportunity to engage with students about nutrition, healthy food choices, and the importance of maintaining a healthy BMI (Body Mass Index). We discussed how BMI can help identify potential health risks and why balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and healthy habits are essential for preventing chronic conditions. Overall, empowering students to take charge of both their health and their future.

We had a great time speaking with the students at Heidelberg High School! 💙
Ms. Pamela Prestage-Lang with the Mississippi To***co Free Coalition led a fun and interactive Va**ng Quiz Basketball Shootout, challenging students with questions about how va**ng can affect the lungs.

I presented on staying healthy and the importance of good hygiene. The students were highly engaged, asked thoughtful questions, and participated throughout the session. To reinforce healthy habits, I distributed hand sanitizer and reminded students to use it regularly to help keep their hands germ-free.

Students can stay healthy at school by practicing good hygiene—washing their hands, covering coughs and sneezes, physical activity each day, eating nutritious meals, and making choices that protect both their physical and mental health.

Since June 2025, Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative, Inc. (SEMRHI) has sponsored a monthly Senior Wellness Day. This free event is thoughtfully designed for adults ages 65 and older. During the two-hour program, seniors participate in health screenings, informative health presentations, and enjoy their favorite bingo games. The Mississippi SHINE Project also provided fresh vegetables to attendees. Witnessing the joy and smiles on their faces as they enter the room, especially when they win a bingo game, is truly priceless.

Senior wellness is important because it helps older adults maintain their health, independence, and quality of life as they age. Focusing on wellness supports not only physical health, but also mental, emotional, and encouraging seniors to stay active, informed, and connected within their communities.
