What do you like to do for fun in your personal time? Or your favorite hobby?
In my personal time, I enjoy spending time with my animals and reading thriller fiction. My favorite place to read is outside on my back patio in my cozy hammock chair, the soft sounds of my dogs, cats, horses, and chickens serving as background music while I relax into the magical world of a good book. Because my hands like to stay busy, I also enjoy cooking and crocheting...and building those intensely complicated bookshelf scenes.

What’s your go-to comfort movie or TV show?
My two favorite movies are The Sound of Music and A Knight's Tale. As far as TV shows, I love period dramas: "Victoria," "Bridgerton," and "Queen Charlotte"

March is Women’s History Month. We want to highlight the amazing women at NRCS!

Jolene Taylor started with NRCS as a student intern and is now working towards full licensure! She’s been with NRCS for over 2 years! Her growth in her counselor identity, self-confidence, and counseling skills has been wonderful to witness. Here’s what she had to say about being a counselor…

1. What inspired you to become a counselor?
I started seeing my a therapist a few years ago, and was pleasantly surprised with my experience. I had a safe place to share my feelings, and I found a person who helped me understand why I behaved like I did. I learned so much about myself that year and made changes that altered the course of my life. Although I had built my life around my family and my teaching career, I became enthralled with the idea of helping others as I had been helped. I enrolled in a counseling program, completed all requirements to earn my license as an LPC-Associate, and am currently looking forward to retiring from teaching and focusing on my new career as a counselor.

2. What do you love most about the work you do as a counselor?
We sometimes get stuck in self-defeating cycles and cannot find our way out. What I love most about the work I do as a counselor is watching others reach the same type of epiphany I reached in my own life.

3. What is your favorite part about working with clients?
My favorite part about working with clients is listening and observing all the ways they communicate, analyzing their cycles and patterns, and helping them find their stuck points.

4. What’s one thing you wish everyone knew about counseling?
What everyone should know about counseling is that the therapy room is a safe place -- free of judgement -- where individuals can feel seen and heard. Therapists can look at our problematic cycles through an objective lens and guide us to a better understanding of ourselves.

Presented this morning at the Law and Ethics in Counseling Conference in New Orleans with my colleague and supervisee, Dr. ABG! Our presentation, The Balancing Act: Ethics, Supervision, and the Counselor Educator’s Dual Roles, focused on navigating ethical decision-making in the classroom while balancing professional standards and university obligations. So grateful for opportunities to collaborate with colleagues who’ve become friends.
