New patients often ask these questions at their first consultation 👀

✔️Why do I have to donate blood?

The most common risk associated with TRT is polycythemia, or an overabundance of red blood cells. This is not a safety issue for our patients as we monitor hematocrit and hemoglobin levels and order platelet donations accordingly.

✔️Will TRT make my hair fall out?

No, hair loss is not typically associated with TRT. The main reasons for hair loss are genetic predisposition, high inflammation and hormonal imbalance.

✔️Do I have to give myself intramuscular injections?

Our patients inject testosterone using a short 30guage needle into a pocket of body fat such as love handles or the buttocks. Our method is much more comfortable than intramuscular injections.

Studies show that excess sugar consumption is directly correlated with low testosterone!

One study published by researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston found that 15% of men experienced such a drastic drop in testosterone from soda consumption that they would have qualified for TRT!

By “sugars” we mean those simple sugars found in processed foods, candy, soda, and baked goods.
Too much sugar increases insulin production which causes testosterone levels to drop. High sugar also suppresses luteinizing hormone (LH), responsible for producing testosterone and human growth hormone (hGH).

Excess sugar consumption over too long of a time period results in reduced insulin production, leading to type 2 diabetes. This causes hormonal chaos and testosterone levels take a dive.

These are the immediate effects of sugar ingestion:
❌Lower total and free testosterone levels in men
❌Decrease s***m motility
❌Reduce number and quality of oocytes
❌Reduce IVF success

The AHA suggest an added-sugar limit of no more than 100 calories or 24g/day of sugar for women and no more than 150 calories or 36g/day of sugar for men.

POLLUTION ⚠️
Environmental toxicity and exposure to electromagnetic radiation are the main factors causing secondary hypogonadism, or low T in young men 👀

Heavy metals decrease T levels; mercury for example decreases luteinizing hormone which directs T production. Heavy metals can also mimic estrogen, allowing for estrogenic changes (think man b***s) in the body.

We are exposed to large amounts of toxins and endocrine disrupting chemicals in our environment from plastics and man-made sources. Common chemicals such as phthalates and bisphenol have been shown to decrease testosterone production.

Chemical detox and reduction of exposure to new threats is an important step for patients who are dealing with low T symptoms. We look to reestablish function of the pituitary-gonadal axis for our patients, this can often be achieved through lifestyle changes (i.e. diet, exercise, supplements) plus high-quality hormone replacement.

Our medical providers diagnose the root causes of your low T and provide easy to follow testosterone therapy options so you can feel better right away!

Did you know that alcohol is the fastest testosterone killer? Alcohol hinders enzymes that help testosterone production. Low to moderate intake does not have a big impact on T levels, so sip in moderation.

🥸 Chronic stressors will lead to a reduction in Testosterone. Stress increases cortisol. Cortisol and testosterone have an inverse relationship, and testosterone tends to limit the stress response.

🍜 Soy products such as tofu, edamame and soy protein isolate contain phytoestrogens, which are similar to estrogen and act with the same function.

🧁 Baked goods and sugar, If these foods are a regular part of your diet, it could be an issue for your testosterone. These types of foods are linked to high insulin levels, and increased visceral body fat, which in turn lower your T levels

🥜 Vegetable oils like canola, corn, peanut, soybean, sunflower oils contain mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids that are linked to low serum T production.

The answer is complex but men who are losing their hair typically have Low T❗️

As you age T levels start to drop, hair loss starts and body hair increases.

What causes male pattern hair loss? 👨‍🦲Several things can trigger hair loss:

🔹Genetics - the largest concern, there isn't much you can really do if it runs in your family

🔹Hormone imbalances involving testosterone, estrogen, DHT, thyroid, and cortisol.

🔹Inflammation- caused by hormonal imbalances, stress and lifestyle cause inflammation in your body and scalp, which can trigger hair loss. Signs to look for:
🔸Itchy scalp
🔸Joint pain- this means inflammation!

In some cases the hormonal balancing that comes with TRT can slow down or stop hair loss and it may even help men with hair growth!

Muscle loss is a sign of low T‼️

One of testosterone’s main functions is to build muscle.

How does T help build muscle? 🤔
Muscle cells have receptors for testosterone called androgen receptors. When T binds to them, muscle fibers are maintained. Without testosterone, maintenance stops and muscle is degraded.

Low T causes the accumulation of fat cells around the belly, these cells produce an enzyme called aromatase. This enzyme converts testosterone to estrogen, which causes more fat to be deposited in the chest, hips and thighs.

Increasing testosterone levels helps reverse fat accumulation and increase lean body mass. Exercise and diet alone aren’t enough for men with low testosterone.

Adding Testosterone Replacement Therapy allows men and women to lose weight, exercise more frequently, and gain lean body mass.

To check your testosterone level and get help restoring lean muscle mass, call us at 410-995-8550 to set up your blood work and schedule a consultation with TRTMD!
