In 2024, it was estimated that around 2 million people were diagnosed with cancer in the U.S., a figure that's increased sharply in recent years. Some of the possible causes of many of these cancers for which genetics, diet and lifestyle cannot explain has left scientists stumped... until now. A new study, published in ACS Publications Environmental Science & Technology, stated: "We concluded that exposure to microplastics is 'suspected' to adversely impact the colon and small intestine in humans." Microplastics are also suspected of causing chronic inflammation and damaging the immune system. "Across the outcomes, we identified that exposure to microplastics is 'suspected' to be a digestive hazard to humans, including a suspected link to colon cancer, using the key characteristics of carcinogens approach," the study added. The study also found that microplastics can impact fertility, damage s***m count in men and impact the ovaries and placenta in women. Microplastic particles can also cause inflammation in the airways, which can increase the risk of developing lung cancer.
While you can't completely avoid microplastics, you can reduce your exposure greatly by simply not using plastic products. Swap out all items in your kitchen that are plastic, especially utensils and storage containers that touch your food and drink. Do not buy synthetic clothing - most are made of plastics, and yes, you CAN breath in the microplastic microfibers as you're wearing those toxic clothes. And obviously, stop buying single-use plastic products such as bottled water. Get a good water filtration system for your sink.
