So frustrating. “As with all dietary supplements, their potency and purity are suspect. One study that analyzed 31 melatonin supplements found that the melatonin content varied from −83% to +478% of the labeled content, different lots of the same product varied by as much as 465%, and 8 of the supplements contained serotonin."

This is one reason why physicians are nervous about “recommending” supplements, which Congress prohibited the FDA from regulating for purity or efficacy.

This Medical Letter review summarizes evidence about the safety and efficacy of over-the-counter melatonin-containing products as sleep aids for insomnia in children, and their role relative to standard nonpharmacological treatments.
