We met our 10 day old granddaughter today- and we are instantly in love. So sweet, calm, alert. So proud of her parents, who are calm, capable and remarkable with her. What a beautiful thing to see. Mind blown , in all the best ways.

It has been an amazing week! On Sunday, I graduated with my certificate in Botanical Art from ! I took up botanical art while Covid shut my practice down, and I’ve never looked back. I’m so thrilled to receive this honor from such a prestigious institution, where people work really hard and I’ve learned so much! I’m so grateful for my wonderful teachers and the fact that NYBG opened their classes to an online forum- otherwise, I’d have never be able to accomplish this! After the last few years of so much stress, illness, and death, I almost didn’t attempt it. But I’m proud that I did!
My final portfolio project was entitled Big Medicine, and I used my doctorate in acupuncture and Chinese medicine, as well as my gardening experience to influence my project of surprising medicinals in the western garden. This marries my 3 interests and I hope to continue doing so!
As of this weren’t enough, we also became grandparents this week! Our beautiful granddaughter, Charlie Jade, was born on June 3. AND we celebrated our wedding anniversary yesterday! I’m am so happy right now!

Meet Lonicera japonica, aka honeysuckle or Jin Yin Hua- my 3rd and largest Big Medicine portfolio submission to certificate. Another very commonly prescribed medicinal in Chinese medicine, this persistent (and often considered invasive) vine is one of our biggest infectious disease medicinals, especially when there is sore throat, fever and irritability (colds, flus, mastitis and even leptospirosis). Organic acids, flavonoids and volatile oils are 3 major classes of bio active compounds of this plant. Also highly anti inflammatory and anti- oxidative , this plant is often used in dermatology, too, treating dermatitis and helping with wound repair. New studies show great promise as an anti- toxin, anti- pyretic, anti-thrombotic, anti -carcinogenic and anti-hyperlipidemic! It’s also protective of your liver. It is also showing promise for treating Parkinson’s. There are many varieties (two shown here) , with slightly different uses. (Again, always consult a TCM practitioner before using)

Here we have Paeoniae lactiflorae, or Shao Yao. It tonifies and soothes QI, nourishes liver blood and calms liver yang. In western terms, it is a serious antioxidant, considered anti-tumor, enhances the immune system, reduces fever, helps with muscle pain and spasms and treats menstrual disorders. It helps balance blood sugar, relieves headaches. Its root is the most commonly used part (hence why it’s more central in the drawing). The fragrant peony flower is commonly used to stabilize emotions (like many flowers) and is commonly used in skincare (you can even make ice cream and cocktails 🍹) my favorite flower in the garden (can you tell?), this plant is majorly Big Medicine!

I am thrilled to say that I just submitted my final portfolio to the NYBG botanical art certification program. Phew! With the few years I’ve had, I didn’t think I could do it in time- but I did - with a little time to spare. I so enjoyed the process of working many hours every day building this. My project is entitled “Big Medicine”: Surprising medicinals in the western garden”. The images are scaled up (and one is almost 3 feet wide) to illustrate the importance of these seemingly (and anything but) every-day plants. Magnoliaceae is one of the oldest flowering trees, with fossils found that are 95 million years old. (They were believed to have been pollinated by beetles bc bees hadn’t arrived yet.) In Chinese medicine, we use both the bark (hou po) and flower (hou po hua) for a wide range of uses . The bark is used to treat digestive and lung disturbances as well as skin issues like eczema. The petals treat asthma, nasal congestion, help with weight loss, have gyn uses, treat toothache (both parts have oral antibacterial properties) You can even take the petals and rub them directly in your skin for wound healing, lightening dark spots and improving elasticity. This is one of Chinese medicine’s most common and powerful medicinals and I’m proud to introduce you to hou po! (NB: TCM generally uses herbs in formulas and not often on@their own. Please comsult a practitioner for use).

I learned a lot doing this piece. Not only is is milkweed one of the most fascinating plants you’ll ever see, but it took me about a month to do this (it’s kinda big at 12x18) (and with some time off for Covid!) Besides being a plant almost all pollinators love, its’ transformation is fascinating to watch. I’d like to try this one again in straight watercolor (this is watercolor and colored pencil). I don’t know that it’s my best work, but I learned so much as I practiced the same flower over and over again. I feel like I know it better now…. Always learning.

I made this with love for a wonderful, dear friend for her birthday. When done with love, the time flies by. The image takes shape and develops slowly, not quite like our friendship of over 40 years! But you get the idea. All rich and valuable things get better with time, some more than others.

Trying to avoid looking at (and smelling) the smoke filled skies or noticing that I can hardly see the mountains— SO, focusing on this! this delicate treatment took restraint and focus. Tiny blips in the magnolia petals, the intricate seedhead, the bark tonality- some burnished red, some scratches and spots. Magnolias are remarkable- growing in some funky lines- so I picked a blossom and blew it up. Now to figure out a frame for it as it blows off the page to the left…

More details on another piece. I needed to screw up the courage to get the colors deeper, the roots a little more 3d. It’s my favorite part of the process, though. The details. The edges. Makes it come alive.
