If you've been told you need a spinal fusion for stenosis or spondylolisthesis, you may have more than one option. 👀

The TOPS System (Total Posterior Spine System) is an alternative to traditional lumbar spinal fusion designed to relieve pain while still allowing for motion at the treated level. For the right person, this can mean pain relief while maintaining more natural movement after surgery.

Spine surgery has come a long way, and new technology is giving people more options than ever before. In this video, neurosurgeon Dr. Joshua Marcus explains:

🦴 How the TOPS procedure works
🦴 Who may be a candidate
🦴 What this means for recovery and movement

Your kidneys and your heart are more connected than you think. 🫀🫘

When the kidneys are not working the way they should, it can put extra stress on the heart and blood vessels. Over time, that can lead to serious heart-related complications.

In fact, people with chronic kidney disease are more likely to experience heart problems than kidney failure itself.

At Sharon Hospital, the work of caring for our community depends on many teams, including the people who make sure our building is safe, clean and running smoothly every day.

As we wrap up March, our Unsung Heroes spotlight recognizes our Environmental Services and Facilities teams. 💙🧼🔧

Together, these teams work behind the scenes to prepare rooms, maintain our spaces, respond quickly when something needs repair and help ensure a safe environment for our patients, visitors and staff.

Their work may not always be visible, but it is essential to the daily operations of our hospital and to the care we provide our community. We are grateful for their dedication, teamwork and the pride they take in caring for our hospital.

Much of a physician’s work is not seen in a single moment.

It is in the early conversations, the preventive screenings, the routine visits, the small decisions that help catch something early or keep someone healthy in the first place.

It is in helping patients manage chronic conditions, recover after setbacks and navigate the health system when things feel overwhelming.

Today, on Doctor’s Day, we recognize the physicians across Nuvance Health who do this work every day, often quietly and without recognition, but with a lasting impact on the patients and communities they serve.

Thank you for the care, the guidance and the responsibility you carry. 💙🩺

Is organic produce really better for you? 🤨🍊

You’ve probably heard that organic foods are healthier, safer or more natural, but the answer isn’t always that simple. Both organic and non-organic fruits and vegetables can be part of a healthy diet, and the best choice often depends on your priorities, budget and what’s available in season.

In this post, we break down what “organic” really means, the pros and cons of each option, and why some non-organic foods — like avocados — can still be a smart, healthy choice. 🥑

We asked Dr. John Choi to share a few important things everyone should know about colorectal cancer. ⬇️

1️⃣ Advanced treatments like robotic surgery can mean less pain and quicker recovery.
2️⃣ Routine screenings, even when you feel fine, can help catch problems early.
3️⃣ Younger adults are being diagnosed more often despite more screening options available, making prevention and awareness more important than ever.

A small habit like staying on schedule with screenings can make a big difference. Talk with your provider about what’s right for you.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. And small lifestyle changes can make a big difference.

Dr. Kelly Teagle shares three things every GI provider wishes more people knew about lowering their risk:

✔️ Eat more fiber
✔️ Stay active
✔️ Quit smoking

Healthy habits, along with regular screenings, can help detect problems early or prevent cancer before it starts.

Talk with your doctor about when you should begin screening.

We are sharing Colon Cancer Amigo's story in honor of Colon Cancer Awareness Month. 💙

At 32, colon cancer was not even on Pedro’s radar.

Like many, he thought it was something that could happen later in life. But for nearly two years, his body was trying to get his attention. Blood in his stool. Unexplained vomiting. Night sweats. Fevers. Severe abdominal pain. Rapid weight loss.

He brushed it off… until he couldn’t.

On May 5, 2022, the pain became unbearable. A trip to the ED revealed a mass in his colon. Within days, everything changed.

A colonoscopy confirmed cancer. Surgery followed. Then came a stage 3B diagnosis and months of chemotherapy.

It was exhausting. It was overwhelming. But giving up was never an option.

After eight rounds of chemo, on January 28, 2023, Pedro reached the words he fought so hard to hear: no evidence of disease.

Today, he carries more than survival. He carries perspective, purpose and a message you cannot ignore:

⚠️ Colon cancer is rising in people under 45. ⚠️

If something feels off, do not wait. Do not brush it off. Listen to your body. Advocate for yourself. Get checked. Because early detection does not just change outcomes. It saves lives.

Thank you, Pedro, for sharing your story with us, with our audience and with everyone who may need to hear it. Your voice is making a difference! 💙

“Because of her, I can.”

In honor of Women’s History Month, our internal medicine residents are sharing the women who inspired their journeys into medicine — mentors, family members, teachers and trailblazers who helped show them what was possible.

Their stories are a reminder that the path to caring for others often begins with someone who believed in us first.

Today marks the spring equinox — a moment of balance, when day and night are equal and the seasons begin to shift. ☀️

In health, balance matters too.
Wellness isn’t just exercise.
It isn’t just nutrition.
It isn’t just sleep, screenings or stress management.
It’s all of it working together.

This month, we’ve talked about many ways to care for your health:

✔️ Colorectal cancer screening
✔️ Kidney health
✔️ Nutrition and healthy habits
✔️ Sleep and recovery
✔️ Women’s preventive care

Each one matters on its own, but real wellness comes from keeping them in balance.

As the days grow longer, it’s a good time to reset, refocus and make space for the habits that help you feel your best.
