And then sometimes you just have to post beautiful food grown and cherished animals raised by beautiful, hard working people. Mushrooms from Rooster Dirt Farm, piglets from Whistle Punk Farm, piggie shot by Leslie Williams.

Thanks to everyone who decides to follow this page. I am writing here about local food, food justice and, as we are now learning about who is disproportionately affected in the meat processing plants, racial justice. And I might throw in some immigration policy and SNAP issues here too (just so you know what you're getting).

We can move away from the industrial CAFO (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) model. If you eat meat, eat local meat. If we stop buying animal protein not humanely raised and processed, it's a small step.

The President of the National Farmers Union argues that strong anti-trust enforcement is needed to make a better life for workers, farmers, rural communities, and animals.

Of the many articles now being written about meat shortages and breaks in the supply chain, this one from Vox is most current. But what most of the articles do not mention are the opportunities to change the way we consume animal products. CAFO (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations), i.e., feedlot meat, is bad for the earth, the animal—and you. And now, our consumption of cheap meat is killing countless and in disproportionate numbers people of color. Consuming less meat is a fine goal, but specifically, consuming less industrial meat should be the ultimate goal. Now is the time to check in with local farmers who raise and process their animals humanely and who give back to the community. Farmers may not have what you want right now because their meat has never been in such demand. If you do want to eat meat, consider local. It’s less harmful and possibly a great step in helping to curb systemic racism in the meat industry.

The meat supply chain is breaking down, but that’s only part of the story.

Our Story

The SouperNatural Kitchen was founded to cook and share fresh food, help support those folks in need of food and connect with local farmers. It has evolved into a place where we share stories about local farmers and their food, food justice, humanely raised and processed animals. We want to be a window into the way Americans can decide to eat well, support their community and provide for those who are struggling and deserve a place at the table as well.
