Newman Memorial Hospital is an independent, integrated rural healthcare system and 25-bed Critical Access Hospital, delivering high-quality emergency, specialty, surgical, and primary care services to communities across Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas. For over 100 years the administration, physicians, nurses, and staff of the hospital have dedicated themselves to the mission of providing compassionate, high-quality, affordable health care to the citizens of Northwest Oklahoma, Southern Kansas, and the Panhandle of Texas. Newman Memorial Hospital is licensed by the Oklahoma State Department of Health, certified as a provider for Medicare (CMS) and is CLIA certified for laboratory services. The Hospital is a member of the American Hospital Association and the Oklahoma Hospital Association. Newman Memorial Hospital is affiliated with the Saints 1st Alliance, a program with St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City that serves 15 hospitals. The program, developed jointly with St. Anthony and the rural hospitals primarily located in northwest Oklahoma, allows Newman and its physicians to have direct access to specialties and services for local patients who require advanced services not available at the local level. Anthony are provided with an assurance that contact with physicians will be timely and transfers generally arranged within 30 minutes. The affiliation also provides the Hospital with access to purchasing agreements which are used to lower the operating cost of the hospital and to other services such as electronic medical records to comply with new federal guidelines. For your healthcare needs, consider Newman Memorial Hospital for top quality physicians, caring nurses, considerate staff, modern facilities, and 21st century technology, all in a small town atmosphere.

Right now, our team has the honor of caring for Volunteer Firefighter Chris Campbell, whose courage and resilience have inspired everyone who has met him during his recovery.

Chris serves our community on a volunteer basis, stepping forward to help protect lives, homes, and property from devastating wildfires. To us, he is a true hero.

As Chris continues receiving care at Newman Memorial Hospital, he is surrounded by a team that has been cheering him on every step of the way.

Chris shared,
โ€œI am incredibly thankful for the care I have received. The nurses and staff here have treated me like family and supported me through every stage of this journey. I could not have asked for better people by my side.โ€

Tom Vasko, Chief Executive Officer of Newman Memorial Hospital, reflected on the experience.

โ€œIt was incredibly humbling to shake the hand of a true hero like Chris. Even more humbling is being part of a team whose caring hands and culture of service help support his recovery. Caring for individuals like Chris is our small way of saying thank you to those who risk their lives to protect our communities.โ€

We also want to recognize and thank the firefighters who responded on February 17. When others were running from danger, you were running toward it to protect lives, homes, and our community. Your courage, sacrifice, and commitment to serving others do not go unnoticed, and we are deeply grateful for everything you do.

Chris, thank you for the courage and sacrifice you show in protecting our communities. It is our honor to stand beside you during your recovery just as you have stood for all of us.

Newman Memorial Hospital is proud to announce the addition of Dr. Brian Gillis, D.O., board-certified physician and surgeon, further expanding specialty and surgical services across Northwest Oklahoma.

Born and raised in Arnett, Oklahoma, Dr. Gillis returns to the region where his journey in medicine first began. A graduate of Arnett High School, he also attended the Shattuck and Ellis County Vocational Technical Program, now known as High Plains Technology Center in Woodward, where he trained in several departments at Newman Memorial Hospital as a student. Those early experiences helped ignite his lifelong passion for medicine and patient care.

Now, after building an accomplished national career spanning more than 25 years in gastrointestinal health and surgical care, Dr. Gillis is returning home to serve the communities that helped shape him.

The addition of Dr. Gillis represents another step in Newman Memorial Hospitalโ€™s ongoing strategy to expand rural access to specialty and surgical care, ensuring patients across Northwest Oklahoma can receive advanced treatment close to home rather than traveling long distances to larger metropolitan health systems.

Dr. Gillis is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Proctology and the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians. He is widely recognized for his expertise in anorectal pathology and physiology, with a subspecialty in defecatory disorders and pelvic floor dysfunction.

He earned his medical degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1995. He completed his internship at St. Vincent Hospital Worcester and his residency at Grandview Hospital Dayton.

Throughout his career, Dr. Gillis has served in numerous leadership roles, including Chief of Surgery at Inland Hospital in Maine and Vice Chief of Staff and member of the Board of Trustees. He also currently serves on the State Medical Board in Augusta, Maine, where both Democratic and Republican leadership appointed him.

Dr. Gillis is a member of the American Osteopathic Association and the American Osteopathic College of Proctology, where he served as Past President from 2007 to 2008.

His clinical expertise includes the diagnosis and treatment of complex gastrointestinal and pelvic floor conditions. Dr. Gillis also developed and operated the largest anorectal defecatory and pelvic floor laboratory in the state of Maine, serving as a referral center for patients suffering from f***l incontinence, chronic constipation, and pelvic floor dysfunction.

Beyond clinical care, Dr. Gillis has shared his expertise nationally, lecturing at leading medical institutions including Harvard, the Mayo Clinic, the Cleveland Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the University of Cincinnati, helping develop data-driven protocols for evaluating and treating pelvic floor disorders.

Despite his national recognition, Dr. Gillisโ€™ ties to Northwest Oklahoma remain strong. His sister, Careylyn Guthrie, lives in Woodward, and his mother also resides locally. Dr. Gillis and his wife Ingrid, an occupational therapist, share three children.

โ€œRecruiting a physician of Dr. Gillisโ€™ caliber who was born and raised in this region is incredibly meaningful for our hospital and our communities,โ€ said Robyn Girton, Chief Administrative Officer of Newman Memorial Hospital. โ€œHis expertise strengthens our ability to provide advanced specialty and surgical care close to home for patients across Northwest Oklahoma.โ€

Dr. Gillis shared that returning to the region is a meaningful milestone in his career.

โ€œReturning to Northwest Oklahoma and to Newman Memorial Hospital is incredibly meaningful,โ€ Dr. Gillis said. โ€œThis is where my journey in medicine began, and I look forward to serving the communities that helped shape my life and career.โ€

Dr. Gillis will begin seeing patients in April in both Woodward and Shattuck.

Newman Memorial Hospital continues its strategic expansion of healthcare services across Northwest Oklahoma with the addition of Brad Pittman, PA-C, further strengthening the hospitalโ€™s growing primary care network and improving access to care for rural communities.

Pittman brings 19 years of medical experience and will begin seeing patients in April at both the Newman Woodward Specialty Clinic and the Newman Shattuck Clinic. His addition supports Newmanโ€™s continued effort to expand local access to primary care, reduce travel burdens for patients, and strengthen coordinated healthcare delivery across the region.

Originally from May, Oklahoma, Pittman has deep ties to Northwest Oklahoma. He graduated from Fort Supply High School before completing his undergraduate studies at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva. He later earned his physician associate degree from the University of Oklahoma Physician Associate Program in 2007 and has spent nearly two decades caring for patients across rural Oklahoma.

Throughout his career, Pittman has built a reputation for compassionate, patient-centered care and strong clinical expertise. He has a particular interest in endocrinology and diabetes management, helping patients better understand and manage chronic health conditions that impact many rural families.

The addition of Pittman reflects Newman Memorial Hospitalโ€™s ongoing commitment to strengthening healthcare access across the region through provider recruitment, expanded clinic services, and investment in coordinated care models designed for rural communities.

โ€œAccess to high-quality primary care is the foundation of a strong rural healthcare system,โ€ said Tom Vasko, CEO of Newman Memorial Hospital. โ€œAs we continue expanding services across Northwest Oklahoma, recruiting experienced providers like Brad Pittman allows us to improve access, strengthen chronic disease management, and ensure our communities can receive excellent care close to home. Bradโ€™s rural roots and commitment to patient care make him a tremendous addition to the Newman healthcare team.โ€

By continuing to grow its provider network and clinic presence across the region, Newman Memorial Hospital remains focused on improving health outcomes through preventive care, chronic disease management, and value-based care initiatives that keep patients healthier while allowing them to receive care within their own communities.

Outside of medicine, Pittman enjoys spending time with his wife, Amy Pittman, and their seven children.

Newman Memorial Hospital is taking a meaningful step to elevate patient care, comfort, and community connection by placing its dining services under the leadership of well-known Executive Chef Jeff Hinkle, owner and operator of Gustoโ€™s Family Restaurant, one of Northwest Oklahomaโ€™s most beloved local dining institutions.

Hinkle, a longtime community member and highly respected culinary leader, will oversee food services for both hospital patients and the Newman Eatery. The decision reflects Newman Memorialโ€™s continued commitment to improving the patient experience while investing directly in the local community.

โ€œFood is a vital part of healing, dignity, and the overall patient experience,โ€ said Tom Vasko, CEO of Newman Memorial Hospital. โ€œBy bringing culinary leadership in-house and partnering with someone who truly understands our community, weโ€™re able to deliver a level of quality not typically seen in hospital dining, while staying true to our mission of keeping care local.โ€
Across the healthcare industry, many hospitals rely on large, outsourced food service companies that emphasize standardization and cost efficiency. While those models may offer convenience for hospitals, they often limit flexibility, reduce freshness, and create distance between care providers and the communities they serve. Newman Memorial chose a different approach; one focused on quality, accountability, and local investment.

By placing dining services under direct hospital leadership, Newman Memorial gains the ability to tailor meals to patient needs, collaborate closely with clinical teams, and respond quickly to feedback. This approach supports improved nutrition, higher patient satisfaction, and a more personalized care experience.
โ€œWe want every part of the hospital experience to reflect who we are,โ€ Vasko said. โ€œThat includes how we care for patients, how we support our staff, and how we show up for our community.โ€

Just as importantly, the decision keeps food service dollars circulating locally rather than sending them outside the region. Local sourcing, local leadership, and local accountability remain central to the hospitalโ€™s long-term strategy.
Hinkleโ€™s selection was a natural fit. Gustoโ€™s Family Restaurant has long been known throughout the area for its high-quality food, consistency, and welcoming atmosphere, values that closely align with Newman Memorialโ€™s culture of care.

โ€œWeโ€™re incredibly grateful to have Jeff join our team and excited to see his creativity and passion for the culinary arts come to life under the Newman mission,โ€ Vasko said.
โ€œJeff understands what quality means to this community,โ€ Vasko added. โ€œHeโ€™s built trust through his work, and that same commitment to excellence will now extend to our patients, staff, and visitors.โ€

The transition is also expected to enhance the Newman Eatery experience for employees and the public, offering meals that feel familiar, fresh, and thoughtfully prepared rather than institutional. Hospital leadership believes that better food contributes not only to patient recovery, but also to staff morale, recruitment, and retention.

Newman Memorial does not charge employees for their daily lunch while working, allowing staff to enjoy chef-quality meals at no cost. Leadership views this as one more way the hospital and community express appreciation for the dedication of those who care for local residents every day.

Healthcare research increasingly shows that food quality influences patient outcomes, satisfaction scores, and overall perceptions of care. For rural hospitals in particular, dining services can serve as a meaningful differentiator, reflecting whether an organization is focused solely on efficiency or fully invested in people.
With Jeff Hinkle leading patient and community dining, Newman Memorial Hospital continues to reinforce its broader mission: raising the standard for rural healthcare while remaining rooted in local values, relationships, and trust.

โ€œIโ€™m excited and honored to start this new opportunity at Newman Memorial. Itโ€™s amazing to see all the new changes and services being offered that I havenโ€™t seen in the 14 years I have lived here. Now I get to help bring a whole new level of quality and creativity to serve the employees, the community, and especially the patients.โ€ - Jeff Hinkle, NMH Executive Chef

Yesterdayโ€™s Birthing Class at Newman Memorial Hospital was filled with great conversation, hands-on learning, and plenty of smiles as families prepared to welcome their little ones!

Neysa Anderson led the class with practical tips and calming guidance to help parents feel confident and ready for the big day. From what to expect during labor to creating a birth plan, she made sure every question was answered.

Jenny Hix shared valuable education on breastfeeding, offering encouragement, real-life insight, and helpful techniques to support a smooth start for both mom and baby.

We were also grateful to have Amy Vasko, APRN-CNM, sharing her expertise and empowering families with knowledge about personalized, compassionate maternity care.

We love seeing our community come together to learn, grow, and prepare for lifeโ€™s sweetest moments. ๐Ÿ’™

If youโ€™re expecting and interested in joining our next birthing class, stay tuned for upcoming dates!
