🚨 Community Health Notification – Measles Exposure in Sumter County 🚨

The South Carolina Department of Public Health (SCDPH) has confirmed a measles case in a Sumter County resident. The source of exposure is still under investigation.

Potential exposure locations and times identified by SCDPH:

📍 Mariachis Mexican Restaurant
1072 Broad St, Sumter
🗓 Friday, Jan 23 | ⏰ 5:30–8:30 PM

📍 Food Lion
5700 Broad St Ext, Sumter
🗓 Saturday, Jan 24 | ⏰ 11:00 AM–2:00 PM

📍 Walmart Neighborhood Market
343 Pinewood Rd, Sumter
🗓 Sunday, Jan 25 | ⏰ 9:00 AM–1:00 PM

👉 There is no known risk outside of these specific timeframes.

If you were at one of these locations during the times listed, especially if you are not vaccinated, monitor for symptoms through:
• Feb 13 (Mariachis)
• Feb 14 (Food Lion)
• Feb 15 (Walmart)

Why this matters
• Measles spreads through the air and can linger up to 2 hours after an infected person leaves.
• About 9 out of 10 unvaccinated people exposed will become infected.
• Measles can cause pneumonia, brain swelling (encephalitis), and death, especially in young children.

Common symptoms (7–14 days after exposure):
• High fever (can exceed 104°F)
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Red or watery eyes
• Rash (appears 3–5 days after symptoms start)

What to do if symptoms develop:
• Do not present to the Clinic. If you think you have been exposed, and you have not had the MMR vaccinations, send a message through the MHS Genesis patient portal to your provider team so we can determine how to treat and/or test you while limiting exposure to others.
• Stay home and avoid contact with others.
• Seek emergency care immediately for trouble breathing, dehydration, confusion, or worsening symptoms — call ahead before arriving.

✅ The MMR vaccine is the most effective prevention.

📞 Shaw AFB Public Health Notification Requirement:
Any suspected or confirmed measles cases must be reported immediately by phone at 803-895-6193 or 803-607-3500 (after hours).

More info from SCDPH:
