February is Heart Month and it’s a great time to remind you not to ignore possible heart attack symptoms or just wait for them to go away.

Last December, Patrick Koch was playing Santa Claus one day and feeling fine. The next day, he was feeling “off” -- he was tired, sweaty and his chest burned. A former police officer who had taken first responder courses, he knew better than to ignore the feeling that something just wasn’t right. He had his wife take him to the SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital-Shawnee Emergency Room where Dr. Cabrera provided immediate treatment for what the doctor refers to as a “widow-maker blockage.”

Thanks to this quick life-saving intervention and the follow-up he received by cardiologists, the retired Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant looks forward to many more years of playing Santa!
