Today is International Stuttering Awareness Day!! Here are some fun facts about stuttering:
1. People who stutter are just as intelligent as people who do not stutter.
2. Simply slowing down and thinking about what they are saying is not the magic cure.
3. Stuttering is neither good nor bad, it is just a difference in speaking.
4. There is no cure for stuttering, but speech therapy can help those who stutter become more effective communicators and help them become more confident in their speaking abilities.
5. LASTLY, boys are more likely to stutter than girls. 😮

Check out these neat infographics below! Also, feel free to ask any questions you may have about stuttering.

Signed,
A stuttering speech therapist 😄

One of our sweet friends, Opal Rose, received an Amtryke from AMBUCS today. Opal has a diagnosis of Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM) which has led to paralysis and flaccidity in her legs. Some of Opal’s strengths are her strong arms and try anything attitude. The Amtryke will allow Opal to propel her tricycle with her arms while still getting continuous and functional movement with her legs. Even more important, Opal has already learned to ride her tricycle independently and can now play outside and ride bikes with her siblings and family. Opal’s mom, Gretchen, says “This is Opal’s first device that will bring her up to the level of her peers and allow her to move independently.”

We love getting to be a part of these journeys with the patients and families that we work with. Go Opal Go!!

She also loves when her and her patients get to what clicks or works for them, and seeing the progress that follows. In her free time, Ashlee enjoys reading, going on walks with her dog and husband (and soon to add in a baby girl 💕), and spending time with her family. A fun fact about Ashlee is that she started out as a fieldwork student for TTS during OT school. 😀
