New private practice spot ☽ ☼

✦ I’m offering private sessions [in your home, in the studio, or outdoors]

✦ I’ve been researching ways to decolonize my practice and although there’s still much to learn I’ve been finding ways to make Ashtanga Yoga accessible to all bodies and peoples. While I’ve been teaching “advanced” students for some time, I aim to diversify make practice. I’ve also been researching & finding ways to continue to honor the tradition and philosophy within my offerings.

✦ If you’re looking to understand yoga as a way of life, please reach out.

✦ Sliding scale & donation based lessons are being offered 6/1-7/15 as I explore ways to share my energy in a reasonable yet available way.

❥ A huge “thank you ♥” to the teachers who have guided the way, and the eastern teachers and philosophers who have been brave enough to speak out & take the time to educate an often too selfish culture. The gift to experience another’s culture is a gift that should not go unrecognized, and while I am learning to understand the practice may be rooted in white supremacy, I’m working hard to combat this and creating a space that empowers us to combat this and liberate all by connecting with the true spirit of ancient yoga; “to yoke us with the connection of our oneness and link us to the universal consciousness” (Ghandhi & Wolf, 2017)

“The only important thing is to follow nature. A tiger should be a good tiger; a tree, a good tree. So people should be people. But to know what people are, one must follow nature and go alone, admitting the importance of the unexpected.”

“Nature is not matter only. She is also spirit.”

Supportive & active backbending for optimal integration and understanding.

Different traditional styles of yoga have preferred methods of exploring deep expressions.

Iyengar Yoga can be thought of as working from the inside out, beginning with the subtle alignment and working towards outer or greater alignment. Ashtanga can sometimes encourage the opposite, stating with outward alignment (e.g. “look up, left leg forward, etc.) and work inward developing a keen sense of personal energetic understanding of how to align subtler aspects of your body in various expressions.

I value both approaches and practice both styles of yoga diligently. This allows for a very unique outlook on practice. This seemingly “non-traditional” approach to yoga is in fact the most traditional way.

In the beginning, before gurus as we know them, everyone practiced Hatha Yoga. This style of yoga is sometimes deemed an “umbrella term” for styles of yoga, but in reality this is true asana practice.

Honor all teachings but do not confine yourself to limits and barriers; (isn’t this what yoga is about?)

Try working from subtle to gross (inward-out) with props. Focus on deep energetic experiences and detailed physical alignment (arms externally rotating, shoulders down, scapula retracting and upwardly rotating, neutral pelvis, internal rotation and addiction of the thighs, lengthening the spine, etc., etc.)

Then take this learning and work unsupported, outward - in.
Focus on the overall shape, feel the big muscles working to support you, activate, be strong, find a sense of energetic grounding through the experience.

I hope this inspires your own creativity in your Hatha Yoga practice & helps you safely explore.

I’ve been sharing a lot of personal insight in my classes lately about the idea of outwardly giving to others while also containing your energy inward to create a container for yourself. The idea of boundaries can seem harsh, especially those who want to take advantage of a naturally open or giving individual.

Creating metaphors within our bodies can help the practical application in the real world be better understood and come more honestly and naturally.

Are you nurturing yourself and staying safe as you give?

Try concentrically hugging to center while eccentrically creating space and see if you find yourself mentally returning to this process while navigating through life.

Happy spring 🌻

I celebrated with my first distance run, a 10 mile run w/ my new jogging stroller.

🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️

Get outside and enjoy this great, green, earth. Than for inside and enjoy a safe container.

Almost spring.

Honor the season change.

Did you know that your gut microbiome operates on its own unique circadian rhythm. This exists in both a yearly rhythm, and more interesting (to me at least) a daily one. The circadian rhythm of your gut microbiome os affected by light (day lights saving / longer days) as well as lifestyle. Take care of yourself. The systems operating within you depend on your health and vice versa. Realize that it is not just you that is affected by your actions. Step back and view how your decisions, actions, and intentions impact both the micro and macrocosm.

🌸 arrangements with my east wing residents at The Arbors.

Working in memory care ha been such a rewarding and meaningful experience. Over the last few months I’ve been creating and implementing programs to increase social engagement, quality of life, and use research based evidence to attempt to slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Creating these flower arrangements occurs once a week and is (probably) the highlight of me week. The incorporation of natural elements in a time when residents are confined indoors (e.g. winter) is an amazing addition to our programming. Seeing them fully engaged is truly inspiring and uplifting.
