Today is World Autism Awareness Day, and for eating disorders professionals, it's a moment that belongs in our clinical conversation, not just in advocacy spaces.
Research is clear: people with autism face significantly elevated rates of eating disorders. The reasons are complex and varied, including sensory sensitivities, thinking patterns, communication differences, and a diagnostic landscape that has historically missed the overlap. Understanding this intersection better equips practitioners to recognize what might otherwise be misread, and to deliver care that actually fits the individual.
