Chiropractic & Nutrition Wellness Center

Chiropractic & Nutrition Wellness Center We recognize health is an inherent state of well-being in mind, body, and spirit. Our role is to remo join me on your journey to healing. In 1983, Dr. Karl R.O.S.

I offer a caring and compassionate, yet no-nonsense approach to core level healing of the underlying malfunctions that lead to poor health. Johnson, a chiropractor and clinical nutritionist in Shelby Township, MI, followed his heart into the health field. Now hundreds of chronic condition patients in southeastern, Michigan have the relief and quality of life that most chronically ill patients hope and wish for, but seldom get. Unlike some who just ‘wander’ into the health profession and make a place for themselves, Dr. Johnson recalls how he was ‘drawn’ into the health field, it was his calling, his destiny. Before starting down his formal education path, Dr. Johnson had met many people and formed great relationships with individuals who he felt had the answers to his questions. Questions about health and healing, and why did the current “health care” system ignore the foundations of health. Time has really flown since Dr. Johnson graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1983. He has met many wonderful people and has been blessed with a busy practice and a wonderful team of assistants. Now more than ever he finds it exciting to be a doctor of chiropractic and a clinical nutritionist. For years there has been a resistance to natural healing methods by others who were not yet enlightened by its benefits. Acceptance of methods complimentary to traditional medical care is at an all time high and as a result more and more people are seeking alternatives to drugs and surgery. His passion for helping people and learning about the principles that underlie the foundations for health is at an all time high. Patients with chronic conditions (fibromyalgia, vertigo and other balance disorders, peripheral neuropathy, migraines, hypothyroidism, severe back, leg, neck and arm pain, ADD, ADHD, Autism, autoimmune disorders, etc.) from all over southeast Michigan flock to the Johnson Chiropractic Neurology & Nutrition because of Dr. Johnson’s whole-person, patient-centered, functional neurological, structural and metabolic approach. Most patients know intuitively that there must be more to helping their chronic condition besides simply trying to patch it up with drugs, and with Dr. Johnson they get that complete functional approach that creates the vitality and quality of life they deserve. Dr. Karl R.O.S. Johnson graduated Summa Cum Laude from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. and was voted to serve as the Vice President of the Pi Tau Delta Delta (an international chiropractic honorary society, open to the top 15 percent of the graduating class who have maintained a 3.50 cumulative GPA, have never withdrawn from a class or have never received less than a grade 3 for any quality grade while at Palmer. Invitations to Pi Tau Delta are issued during the final academic term.) At Palmer College of Chiropractic I began my intense study of neurology that I knew would allow me to serve my patients at a high level. Chiropractic Neurology is the newest, state of the art diagnostic and treatment technique. It brings together research findings from the fields of psychology, neuropsychiatry, neurology, neurophysiology, and nutrition — and used this knowledge to bring hope to the sick, unhappy, and hurting of all ages. Dr. Johnson states, "As a chiropractic physician, I strive to provide the finest care possible and provide an optimum environment for healing. Using the latest diagnostic tests to find the cause of your pain, suffering or ill health, it is possible to design a plan of care to get you back to your favorite activities fast. In my practice, you’ll discover a complete array of services for your entire family. Through a great number of continuing education courses, I have been very careful to master the newest and most effective techniques in chiropractic rehabilitative and wellness services as well as nutritional therapy. The procedures used in my practice are well suited for all ages from infancy to the elderly. Chiropractic is a quickly advancing field and I believe it takes dedication, diligence and just plain hard work to keep up. But I feel I must for the good of my patients." My personal free time is spent training for distance charitable cycling events (such as the MS Bike), a pursuit I picked up after one of my patients encouraged me to participate in my first 200 mile bike ride over 18 years ago. I have completed 17 such rides on the western side of Michigan and even participated in a team triathalon where my team came in first place for the age group. I am the proud parent of 3 young adults, and am happily married to my wife Sandra. I also love to learn and study about health, the human body, success principles, and science. I enjoy gardening, healthy eating, fishing, scuba diving, sailing, hiking, photography and sight seeing.

Did you know a small handful of nuts can make a meaningful difference for your heart? 💚🥜

A large systematic review and meta-analysis of 63 studies found that for every extra 28 grams of nuts you eat per week (about a small handful), your risk of coronary heart disease drops by 4% and your risk of stroke drops by 1%. 📊❤️

In simple terms: consistently choosing a handful of almonds, walnuts, pistachios, or mixed nuts instead of ultra-processed snacks can quietly add up to powerful protection for your cardiovascular system over time. 🌰🥗

While no single food is a magic bullet, habits like:
- Adding nuts to your salads or oatmeal 🥣
- Keeping a portioned container of nuts in your bag or car 🚗
- Pairing nuts with fruit as a mid-afternoon snack 🍎

can support healthier blood vessels, better cholesterol balance, and more stable energy. 💪🫀

Nourish your heart with small choices, repeated daily. 🌱✨

Vitamin D Levels May Improve Outcomes for Metabolic Syndrome Patients ☀️

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions—including central obesity (weight carried around the midsection), high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, and elevated blood sugar—that tend to show up together and dramatically increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Many people are told they have “a few borderline numbers,” when in reality they’re already on the metabolic syndrome spectrum.

In an analysis of two decades of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, researchers found something encouraging: people with metabolic syndrome who maintained vitamin D levels toward the upper end of the healthy range (above 75 nmol/L) had a lower risk of both cancer and cardiovascular-related death compared to those with lower vitamin D levels.

While vitamin D is not a magic cure and shouldn’t replace a comprehensive care plan, these findings suggest that keeping vitamin D in an optimal range may help blunt some of the added health risks that come with metabolic syndrome—especially when combined with targeted nutrition, movement, and nervous system support. 🥦🚶‍♀️🧠

This is one more reminder that seemingly “small” lab values, like vitamin D, can play a big role in long-term outcomes. If you’re dealing with metabolic issues, it may be worth asking your provider to check your vitamin D level and discussing what an optimal range looks like for you. 💬🧪

Struggling to connect the dots between your thoughts, emotions, and physical health? 🤔🧠💭

You’re not alone. Many of my patients say things like, “Stress makes my pain flare,” or “When my anxiety spikes, my thyroid and sleep go off the rails.” They *feel* the connection—but haven’t been given a framework to understand it. 😣💬

This article on the history and evolution of mind-body medicine is a great place to start. 📚 It walks through how we went from viewing the body like a machine with separate parts… to recognizing that your brain, nervous system, immune system, gut, and hormones are constantly “talking” to each other. 🧬🧠💓

You’ll see how science is finally catching up with what many have known intuitively for years: your thoughts, beliefs, and emotional experiences can influence inflammation, pain levels, digestion, immune health, and even how well your body heals. 🌿✨

If you’ve ever wondered why:
- Stress makes your chronic pain, migraines, or gut issues worse 😖
- You feel “wired and tired” no matter how many tests look “normal” 😵‍💤
- Old emotional traumas seem to show up as physical symptoms 💔➡️🤕

…this is a powerful primer that helps connect those dots and gives you language for what you’re living with every day. 🧩💡

New Female Crash Test Dummy to Make Cars Safer for Women 🚗👩

The United States Department of Transportation has approved a new female crash test dummy that finally reflects how women’s bodies are actually built and injured in real-world crashes. This updated model includes a far more accurate anatomical representation of the female neck, pelvis, collarbone, and legs—areas where injuries often differ significantly from those seen in men. 🦴📊

Why does this matter? Because current research shows that women are significantly more likely than men to be seriously injured or killed in automobile crashes. One major reason: for decades, most safety testing has been based on a model of an “average” man from the 1970s. In many tests, women were either not represented at all, or only included using scaled-down male dummies that didn’t properly reflect differences in body structure, height, weight distribution, and biomechanics. ⚠️👩‍🔬

By using a crash test dummy that better mirrors female anatomy, car manufacturers and safety regulators can more accurately evaluate how seat belts, airbags, headrests, and other safety systems perform for women—not just men. Over time, this can lead to smarter vehicle design, safety features that protect more people, and fewer preventable injuries and deaths on the road. 🚘❤️

Our brains don’t age all at once—they change in stages. 🧠⏳

A large brain imaging study of nearly 3,900 people, from newborns to age 90, found key “pivot points” in brain connectivity around ages 9, 32, 66, and 83. 📊👶🧑‍🦳

- Early childhood: rapid brain growth and development 🌱🧠
- Young adulthood: major “rewiring” and higher vulnerability to mental health challenges 🔄🧠
- Midlife: a period of relative stability ⚖️
- Older age: brain regions become more independent (less connected), then show a sharper decline 🧓📉

Understanding these stages can help us better protect and support brain health at every age. 💪🧠

Treatment for Forward Head Posture 📱💻

Do you ever catch yourself leaning toward your computer or phone, only to realize your head is jutting forward over your shoulders? That’s forward head posture—a common postural misalignment where the head shifts in front of the body’s center of gravity. Over time, this can dramatically increase strain on the neck, shoulders, and upper back, often showing up as tight muscles, headaches, and that “heavy head” feeling by the end of the day. 😣

What’s interesting is that forward head posture isn’t just about the neck. Your breathing muscle—the diaphragm—can also play a role. 🫁 In a recent study of 46 young adult women with symptomatic forward head posture, researchers compared standard neck exercises alone to neck exercises plus a specific hands-on technique called diaphragm myofascial release. This technique gently works through tension, stiffness, and fascial restrictions around the diaphragm to help it move and function more freely.

The results? ✅ The group that received diaphragm myofascial release in addition to neck exercises experienced greater improvements not only in cervical spine posture (how the neck and head are aligned) but also in chest expansion—meaning they could breathe more fully and efficiently. Better posture and better breathing often go hand in hand. 🌬️

In practice, doctors of chiropractic frequently take this kind of whole-person approach. Rather than just “straightening you up,” they may combine:
- Manual therapies to reduce muscle and fascial tension 💆‍♂️
- Gentle joint and spinal adjustments to restore better alignment and motion 🧠🦴
- Targeted corrective exercises to retrain posture and support long-term changes 🏋️

This layered strategy can be especially effective for tech-related posture problems that build up slowly over months and years. If you’re noticing chronic neck tightness, recurring headaches, or a forward “hunched” look in photos, it may be a sign your posture—and possibly your breathing mechanics—need some attention. 📸

Does Exercise Redirect Energy Away from Tumors? 💪🧬

Emerging research suggests that exercise may do much more than boost mood and support weight management—it may also change how your body “prioritizes” energy, even in the presence of cancer. 🧠⚖️

In a recent animal study, consistent exercise appeared to divert key resources—glucose (sugar) and oxygen—toward working muscles and away from tumors. In mouse models, this metabolic “re-routing” was associated with a striking 60% slowdown in tumor growth over just four weeks. 🏃‍♀️➡️💪 ⬇️🎗

Even more intriguing: rodents that exercised *before* tumors were introduced showed similar protective effects. In other words, regular movement seemed to create a less favorable environment for tumor growth from the start, almost like “preparing the battlefield” in the body’s favor. 🛡️🩺

If these findings translate to humans, they would add to a growing body of evidence showing that exercise isn’t just a “nice-to-have” for general wellness—it may become an important supportive strategy in both the **prevention** and **treatment** of cancer. Of course, more human studies are needed, and exercise should always be tailored to each person’s abilities and medical guidance. 👟📊

But this research reinforces a powerful message: even simple, consistent movement can play a meaningful role in how your body manages serious health challenges. 🌱💚

Daily Orange Juice May Influence Heart Health 🧡🍊

Could something as simple as your morning glass of orange juice be doing more than just waking you up? 🤔

In a recent experiment, researchers found that drinking two cups of 100% orange juice a day actually helped “switch on” certain genes involved in:
- Regulating inflammation (a key driver behind many heart issues) 💥❤️
- Supporting healthy blood pressure 🩺
- Improving how the body handles fats 🧬

All of these are important pieces of the heart health puzzle. 🧩

While this doesn’t mean orange juice is a magic cure, it suggests that small, consistent daily habits—like choosing real, 100% orange juice over sugary drinks—may gently nudge your body toward better cardiovascular health over time. 🌿❤️

Poor Oral Health Linked to Alzheimer’s 🧠🦷

Most people think of the dentist as someone who just helps prevent cavities and keep smiles bright. But emerging research is painting a much bigger picture: what’s happening in your mouth may be influencing what happens in your brain.

A scoping review that pulled together 45 different studies found that chronic oral problems—especially gum disease (periodontitis) and tooth loss—are associated with a higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease. In other words, long-standing inflammation and infection in the mouth don’t just stay in the mouth.

Researchers suggest several ways poor oral health may impact cognitive health over time:

- **Systemic inflammation:** Ongoing gum disease can keep your immune system “on fire,” contributing to low-grade, body-wide inflammation that also affects the brain. 🔥
- **Microbial translocation:** Harmful oral bacteria and their toxins can enter the bloodstream, potentially crossing into the brain and disrupting normal function. 🦠
- **Amyloid-related changes:** Chronic inflammation and infection may promote “amyloidogenic” processes—abnormal protein build-up in the brain that’s strongly linked to Alzheimer’s. 🧩
- **Genetic susceptibility:** Certain genetic profiles may make some people more vulnerable to the brain effects of poor oral health. 🧬
- **Impaired chewing (masticatory function):** Losing teeth or having pain when chewing can reduce blood flow and sensory stimulation to the brain, which may negatively impact cognition over time. 🍽️

For patients and families worried about brain health, this is one more reminder that **whole-body care matters**. Daily brushing and flossing, regular dental checkups, managing blood sugar, supporting a healthy microbiome, and reducing inflammation aren’t just about avoiding fillings—they may also be important pieces of your long-term brain-health strategy. 💪🧠
