Participants using “standard” size fl**ges had significantly less milk output and comfort than those who were properly fitted.

Fl**ge fitting is a process that should be individualized to the patient and may require a trial of one or more sizes during a pumping session. Smaller sizes determined using this individualized process and starting with ni**le tip measurement may be used without compromising milk output or comfort.

Since taking fl**ge fitting classes with Babies in Common, I am more inspired than ever not only to offer fl**ge fittings, but to share what I’ve learned with doulas, midwives, OBs, and anyone else who might talk about pumping with new or expecting moms!
Since the first study EVER on the effects of fl**ge size on milk output and mom’s comfort was published in 2025 (link in comments), so much of what we once knew and taught has changed! But most perinatal professionals are not yet aware of the new evidence-based recommendations! Most are also not aware of the impacts of poor-performing pumps and silicone fl**ges and inserts on milk supply! My goal is to change all that so that all moms receive the knowledge they need to maximize their milk supply when pumping! If you’ve ever wondered, there’s no need to warm up your pumped milk!

Does the temperature of expressed milk fed to a newborn matter? Can it be warm, room temperpature, or even cold? All are okay, according to this 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis. it found milk’s temperature had no clinically significant effect on babies’ body temperature, heart rate, or oxygen level.
