Great Halloween Tools from Autism Community Connection! 👻
🎃 Make This Halloween a Sweet Success! 🎃
Getting ready for a trick-or-treating adventure? These simple tricks will help ensure everyone has a spooktacular time!
Turn Your Home into Halloween Headquarters
Let your kiddo become a costume superstar before the big event! Have a few dress rehearsals at home where they can stomp around in their costume, practice their best "trick or treat!" voice, and get used to any masks or accessories. Bonus: you'll discover any uncomfortable bits before you're three houses down the street!
Story Time Gets Spooky
Snuggle up with Halloween books that show the trick-or-treating adventure in action. Watching storybook characters knock on doors and collect candy helps kids know exactly what to expect when it's their turn to fill their buckets with goodies.
Set up your own pretend trick-or-treating at home!
Take turns being the candy-giver and the trick-or-treater. Practice saying "trick or treat," "thank you," and how to hold out their bucket. If your child isn't able to say the words, get creative together! Try a blue bucket to signal non-verbal trick-or-treaters, teach a simple sign in sign language, or make a cheerful sign that explains their unique way of celebrating.
Stick to Your Neighborhood
Start your trick-or-treating journey on familiar turf. Walking past places they recognize with people they know makes everything feel safer and more comfortable. You can always venture farther in future years!
Know When to Call It a Night
The best Halloween ends on a high note! Watch for signs that your kiddo is getting tired, overwhelmed, or has had enough excitement. Sometimes 20 minutes of pure fun beats an hour that ends in tears!
And of course, don’t forget that ACC will be hosting Trunk or Treat on Saturday, October 18!
