Gary is our Resident Spotlight this month as he has shown tremendous determination and progress during his skilled stay here at Shell Rock Senior Living, working hard in therapy with a goal always set on getting back home. We are thrilled to celebrate his success and look forward to seeing him return home soon, and we are so glad he has been part of our community. 🌟💪🏻
Gary grew up in Waterloo in a busy household as one of 15 children, right in the middle of the bunch, and Shell Rock has been his home for the past 50 years. He proudly served in the Navy, spending time in Vietnam patrolling rivers on boats, serving on a destroyer in North Fork, Virginia, and even experiencing the Caribbean and Mediterranean. He was in the service for 3 years, 9 months, and 1 day. He retired from John Deere after 32 years. Gary enjoys fishing, reading, traveling the world— especially on cruises - and attending movies, going to casinos, coffee outings with his brothers, and every event his three grandchildren are involved in. 🏈
He and his wife of 42 years are inseparable best friends who love adventures together, and Gary's fun sense of humor, laid-back attitude, and kind heart make him a favorite around here. His advice to youth is simple and wise: save 10% of every dime you earn. 😊
A proud Navy veteran, devoted family man, sports fan, and even a former wrestler who once worked out with Dan Gable, Gary will be the first one up dancing if "Paradise By The Dashboard Lights" by Meat Loaf or "Taking Care of Business" by Bachman- Turner Overdrive comes on. We are so grateful to have Gary as part of our community. 💙
