🍀Red clover (Trifolium pratense)🍀 is an herb we often utilize for women's health in our office for a variety of reasons! The plant is rich in isoflavones, which are compounds that act as phytoestrogens, plant chemicals similar to the female hormone estrogen. This is why red clover is often utilized in herbal blend formulas for menopause, osteoporosis, PCOS, and other hormonal disorders in women.
🍀The phytoestrogen content of red clover can help support menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats, along with osteoporosis, since loss of estrogen can promote bone loss. Replenishing some of those estrogen levels through utilizing red clover can help lessen the severity of those symptoms!
Since the herb is also rich in nutrients such as calcium and other vitamins and minerals, it can additionally be used in cardiovascular and respiratory blends. One study found that menopausal women taking red clover supplements had stronger, more flexible arteries (called arterial compliance), which can help prevent heart disease.
So while you think of good luck with clovers on 🍀St. Patrick's Day🍀, you can now also think of its wonderful medicinal properties!

Mind-Body Medicine is a branch of medicine which focuses on re-training and guiding our thoughts to be more positive and healing to our bodies. Many intervention strategies fall under Mind-Body, including meditation, acupuncture, stress-relief techniques, massage, biofeedback, spiritual prayer, music / art, mindfulness, and counseling.

The goal of Mind-Body medicine is to take advantage of the connection between mind, brain, and body. The connection is already there, which is why negative thoughts of anxiety or depression can actually cause physical symptoms such as digestive discomfort, chest pain, upset stomach, cold sweats, as well as other aches and pains. By focusing on re-training the mind to have more positive thoughts, stress-relief, and gratitude, you can help relieve some of the physical ailments, and even prevent ones in the future! Did you know even Hippocrates “recognized the moral and spiritual aspects of healing, and believed that treatment could occur only with consideration of attitude, environmental influences, and natural remedies”.

There can be many causes of physical symptoms, which is why a physical exam and tests should still be run to determine the cause of discomfort. You can schedule an appointment to help figure out the cause and give Mind-Body medicine a try!

Sleep is a vital function of our daily lives, which allows our body and mind to recharge, cells to regenerate, and our immune system to stay strong. It might seem at times like everyone else EXCEPT you is sleeping 8 hours, but the reality of it is lots of folks struggle with sleep! Whether you can’t fall asleep, can’t stay asleep, or wake up too early, there are tons of solutions available.

First Step
The first step encompasses being a good detective and getting to the root cause of your sleep problems. Are you experiencing ruminating thoughts that stir up anxiety and prevent you from falling asleep? Do you have good “sleep hygiene” – a routine where you keep the lights low, avoid screen time, and stick with calming activities for the hour prior to bedtime? Are you getting up every hour to urinate because of a week bladder? Diabetes? An enlarged prostate? We can help you figure out what are the obstacles to you feeling your best and sleeping adequately.

Second Step
Did you know we spend roughly 1/3 of our life sleeping? What does that mean to you personally – are you sleeping 6 hours? 9 hours? Somewhere in between? Find out how much you should sleep by listening to your body! If sleeping 8 hours makes you feel groggy, you might be someone who sleeps best with a 7 hour sleep schedule. However, just because you got used to regularly sleeping 5-6 hours, does not mean this is cutting it! The other important factor is what drives your sleep schedule? Is it your work hours? Your kid’s routines? Is there any wiggle room to moving the hours around?

Third and Final Step
Solutions! Let us help you figure out how to get those 7 hours of restful sleep. Would you benefit from incorporating chamomile tea into your night-time routine? Avoiding alcohol which actually results in less-restful sleep? Moving your exercise routine to the morning hours since the endorphins released during workouts tend to make people feel awake and energized? Lowering the thermostat before bed? Or maybe adding in small doses of melatonin or sleep-aid herbs?

Schedule an appointment to help get the rest you deserve!

Have you ever heard of a hydrocollator pack? They are cloth packs filled with bentonite clay, which are kept submerged in hot water in a hydrocollator, like the one in our picture! They are pulled out and wrapped in a towel, so that they can be applied externally to alleviate inflammatory pain, joint pain, arthritis, congestion, bruised tissue, and strains. Additional benefits include an increase in soft tissue flexibility, muscle resistance, better contraction of smooth muscles, and improvement in the muscles' motor function.
Plus who doesn't love a hot pack on a cold day?

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) refers to a type of mood disorder or depression that occurs with a change of season. While many people experience some level of “winter blues” with the days being shorter/darker/colder, some individuals experience more serious mood changes that affect how they function. For most of these people, these mood changes tend to go away in the spring and summer but are recurring and come back every fall and winter.

Symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder:

*Feeling overly sad / depressed
*Lack of motivation on a daily basis
*Oversleeping
*Overeating and craving of carbohydrates
*Withdrawal from social activities
*Feeling fatigued and sluggish
*Losing interest in activities you would normally enjoy
*Feeling hopeless

There’s no need to suffer alone in silence, schedule an appointment to learn how diet, lifestyle changes, light therapy, vitamin D, counseling, and other supplements can help!

Did you know that as little as 10minutes of midday sun daily can improve your Vitamin D levels? Something as simple as taking a brisk 15minute walk during your daily lunch break can not only help improve your vitamin D levels but combine exercise into your routine. A double whammy for seasonal affective disorder!

The beauty of herbal medicine is that it extends far beyond pharmacological actions - the line of thinking that "X herb can be used instead of Y medication". In all herbal traditions - East, West, Indigenous - plant energetics play a foundational aspect in understanding herbal medicine actions and outcomes.

Herbs can be described as having four main energetics: moist, dry, cold and hot. Most herbs can be categorized with two of these qualities, such as cold and moist, hot and dry, cool and dry, etc. Seasons also have their own energetics. Winter months are considered to be damp and cold (or dry and cold depending upon where you live), which can make our bodies feel cold, constricted, and achy - think arthritis, cold hands and feet, & tension headaches. So what better match than combating these winter months with lovely warming herbs!

Some of these include:

Cayenne (Capsicum frutescens)
Cinnamon (Cinnamomum spp.)
Elecampane (Inula helenium
Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana)
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
Sage (Salvia officinalis)
Turmeric (Curcuma longa)

Most of these herbs can be incorporated as culinary herbs, which can be used to flavor delicious soups and stews, adding those warming qualities to our daily diets. Other herbs can be found in teas (cinnamon, ginger, sage) and sipped on during the cold winter nights. However, if you’re someone who suffers from acid reflux, significant musculoskeletal tension, extremely dry skin and cracking nails, these may be an indication of excess heat and dryness in the body, and not all of these herbs may be suitable for you.
