You wouldn’t expect your sunscreen to protect your skin if it rinsed off in a few minutes. The same goes for fluoride varnish. Fluoride uptake isn’t just about the level of NaF, it’s about the contact time and adhesion to enamel. When varnish stays in place long enough, enamel has more time to incorporate fluoride ions, and create a strong level of protection. 4-6 hours is the amount of time our varnish stays in place, and it’s what the ADA recommends for maximum effectiveness.
