🌱Herb of the week: Mullein- Verbascum thapsus 🌱

This iconic fuzzy leaved plant is most commonly used as tea (leaves) or even made into a syrup. In its second year of growth, a flower spike emerges from the center with clustered little yellow flowers. Mullein is known to grow in poor compacted soil and can grow up to 8 feet tall.

Mullein is commonly used as an expectorant, a great herb for asthma. It has also demulcent qualities, to create a soothing anti-inflammatory coating over mucous membranes.

Fun fact, in folk use cases, mullein can be nature’s toilet paper!

🌱Herb of the week: Marshmallow- Althaea 🌱

Marshmallow root has been used for centuries as food and in medicine. It’s in the mucilage-heavy Malvaceae family and is a perennial that can be found growing alongside marshes, riverbanks, and other damp areas. The root can be decocted or cold infused as marshmallow root tea.

It is well loved to soothe and moisten mucous membranes of the respiratory, digestive, and urinary tracts. It relieves sore throats and helps to expel excess mucus. You can use marshmallow in your favorite tea blends, cosmetic products, and in candies! It inspired the original marshmallows.

🌿Herb of the week: Wood Betony! 🌿

As a member of the mint family, wood betony is native to Europe, but can also be found in North America and is usually in dry grasslands and meadows.

Wood Betony is a tonic herb known for its benefits to the solar plexus and digestive system. It improves circulation, supports digestion, and calms nervous tension, making it especially helpful for digestive issues linked to anxiety, stress, or depression. It both stimulates weak digestion and soothes the system.

🌱Herb of the week: Elecampane (Inula helenium)- help reclaim your breath! 🌱

Known for its bright yellow, daisy-like flowers, elecampane is native to Europe and parts of Asia. Roots are used and is one of the strongest antibacterial herbs that we have (according to herbalist Matthew Wood) and can kill bacteria, especially in tuberculosis.
Also, it’s well used in other respiratory infections, too like bronchitis and asthma.

This herb gets things moving like stagnant lymphs, stuck mucus as an expectorant, and slow digestion as an anti-parasitic.
