**Sometimes I ask my hands to do something, and it’s like they say, ‘Nope, I’m gonna do something else...’ ** said a ten year old girl in my clinic. Sometimes kids have the most amazing insights. (Free stock image)

Play is so important. Video games are not “play”.

Researchers have proved play is more than just fun and games, as it teaches invaluable life skills to our youth. So why is it nearly dead in America?

In children’s yoga we call it “Superman”, Hatha yoga calls it Salambasana, and for infants, we refer to it as “tummy time”. Why is prone extension so important? We are born in physiological flexion (fetal position), and develop the ability to unfold as we experience our environment and build strength as we lay neural pathways in our brains. This phenomenon is most noticeable at about five months of age, when infants typically are able to more fully lift that heavy head up, and more fully engage with all that is around them. This strengthening and neural growth allows children to cognitively override some protective reflexes and build necessary core strength. We create many therapeutic activities in the clinic to maximize the developmental power of this body position.

Why the ball pit? Besides the fact that children usually find it motivating, this fun clinic equipment provides all sorts of sensory input: tactile (it touches you everywhere, proprioceptive (lots of tactile feedback contributes to the sense of knowing where you are in space as you move around and change positions). It also provides a great target and way to break a fall with more vigorous swinging and motor planning activities. We jump into it, swing into it, drop into it-all good activities to add the vestibular system into our repertoire.

This week in the clinic is brought to you by SPINNING - we’ve been going round and round...why?
💫spinning is experienced through the fluid filled canals in our inner ear, and gives us information about where we are in space in relation to gravity and to our environment. It is an organizing sensation, and often influences posture, arousal, and readiness to engage in more demanding activities. Kids usually love to spin, for good reason. Others are reluctant to spin, but often when enough therapeutic trust is established, and they try it, they beg for more. Occupational therapists use spinning, and other sensory inputs, to influence adaptive responses on a subcortical level. More spinning, please!
