This week’s Friday fact is in honor of Cherry the retired Shepherdsville K9 Officer who passed away this week.
There are approximately 50,000 active police K9s in the United States. These highly trained dogs are partners to law enforcement officers and are used for various tasks, including drug and explosive detection, criminal apprehension, and locating missing persons.
Not only do these dogs serve as amazing assets to the police departments and communities they serve they form an incredibly bond with the human officer they serve with. They truly become partners in both law enforcement and life. Many of these amazing K9 end up spending their retirement years with the officer they served with.
