👋 Whether you're a new student in one of my BLS classes or an experienced provider refreshing your ACLS, let's talk about why your body mechanics and technique matter just as much as your effort. 💡

When you perform chest compressions, you are temporarily stepping in to act as the patient's heart. 🫀 You are mechanically squeezing the heart muscle between the sternum (breastbone) and the spine to force blood up to the brain. Current AHA guidelines require us to compress an adult's chest at a depth of at least 2 inches (but no more than 2.4 inches) and at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute. ⏱️

If you try to achieve that depth and speed using just your shoulder and triceps muscles, you will inevitably "gas out." 📉

Here is how we fix it with proper body mechanics: 🛠️
✅ Positioning: 🧍 Kneel close to the patient. Bring your shoulders directly over your hands.
✅ Lock Your Joints: 🔒 Lock your elbows straight. Think of your arms as rigid steel rods.
✅ Use Your Core: ⚖️ Instead of pushing down with your arms, hinge at your waist. Let the natural weight of your upper body drop onto the chest, and then use your core and hips to pull yourself back up.

CPR can feel intimidating, but it's just a matter of mechanics and rhythm.
