Lawrence “Larry” I. Massey
July 9, 1937-September 9, 2025
Lawrence “Larry” I. Massey, age 88, of Shirley, Indiana, passed into the arms of his heavenly father on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. Larry was born on Monday, July 9th, in 1937, in Lafayette, Indiana, to the late Lawrence A. and Emma (Hudson) Massey.
Larry had many wonderful memories of growing up in the town of Shirley; he had access to delicious fountain sodas due to his father owning the local Massey Drugstore and Soda Shop. Larry graduated from Kennard High School in 1956. While in high school he played baseball; he played in the position of shortstop. His love of sports continued throughout his life. He became an umpire for sporting events and followed his favorite team, the Indianapolis Colts, and was a fan of the Houston Astros from his time living in Houston, Texas.
Larry worked many jobs. He worked as a custodian at Greenfield Central High School for many years. He worked as a maintenance repairman for the town of Shirley for fifteen years until retiring. Larry also started his own small engine repair business and made many friends along the way.
Larry met his true love back in his home state of Indiana. On Saturday, August 6, 2006, Larry married Martha “Marty” Egly, from Hartford City, Indiana, and settled down in Shirley, Indiana. They have been happily married ever since that day. Marty shared wonderful memories of Larry bringing her bouquets of daisies. Marty also recalled the days of their camping trips together in Kentucky for Civil War reenactments, where they would be the only couple who would be brave enough to camp in a tent in the rain.
Larry enjoyed many things in his life. In his younger years he loved going on rides on his Gold Wing and Silver Wing motorcycles and was part of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association Club of New Castle.
He liked watching television shows, such as “Walker, Texas Ranger,” a lot, to Marty’s angst, and true crime shows. He enjoyed classic country, gospel, and Christian music. When it came to food, he wasn't picky; he loved Mexican food, Chinese food, and good old-fashioned fried chicken, biscuits and sausage gravy, Rice Krispie Treats, and ice cream. According to Marty, he pretty much liked all sweets. His favorite was Marty’s deviled eggs. He could not get enough of them. As long as it wasn’t a green vegetable, he was pretty much happy to eat anything.
Larry will be always loved, never forgotten, and forever missed.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Marty. Also mourning the loss of Larry are his children, Stephen (Betty) Massey, Tracy Davis, Nissa Massey, Kerry Massey, and Lori (Andrew) Beeks, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Larry is also survived by his first wife and mother to sons Stephen and Mark, Jana Keller.
In addition to Larry's parents, he is also preceded in death by his second wife, Vi Deforge; son, Mark Massey; and brother, Bichard Massey
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2025, from 11:00 am, with the funeral service to follow at 12:30 pm, with Pastor Jim Jackson and Pastor Phil Baisley officiating the service at the Shirley Friends Church in Shirley, Indiana, on Thursday, September 18, 2025. The family would like to extend an invitation to join them to share dinner and memories of Larry following the service.

Denise “Dee” Anne Rose

February 21, 1943 – September 6, 2025

Our beloved mother, Denise “Dee” Anne Rose, born Denise Anne Allee, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2025, surrounded by family and love, and returned home to the arms of Jesus after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. She was 82 years old.

Mom was born on February 21, 1943, in Duluth, Minnesota, and lived a full and vibrant life marked by hard work, creativity, laughter, and love for her family. She attended Fortuna Union High School in Fortuna, California, and later studied accountancy at Salem College of Business in Salem, Oregon.

Over the years, Mom worked in many roles—from bartending and factory work to following her entrepreneurial spirit as the owner of Hoagies Café in Wendell, Idaho, and later, Blue Rose Karaoke in Pentwater, Michigan.

Her life took her all over the country—living in California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, and Oregon (which she always considered to be her true home, no matter where she lived). Everywhere she went, she made friends easily and left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Music was the heartbeat of Mom’s life. She played guitar and sang with a voice that carried her love of country, including country gospel, and Irish songs. She rocked many a grandbaby to sleep as she crooned “Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral (That's An Irish Lullaby)” and “You Are My Sunshine” to them. Mom’s favorite music artists included Lacy J. Dalton and Daniel O’Donnell – and she loved singing karaoke and was always ready to fill a room with music and laughter.

Mom had a deep love for animals—especially horses (Arabians always claimed first place in her heart, with any other horse breed taking a distant second). She also loved dogs of every shape, size, and color. She could never pass by a dog without stopping to give it love and affection. She delighted in feeding the birds in her yard, and making porch friends with her neighborhood chipmunks, who learned to trust her enough to eat from her hand and sometimes even climbed onto her lap for treats.

Her home and porch were always overflowing with the flowers and plants that she tended with loving care. She also enjoyed crocheting, and was an enthusiastic family historian, with special pride in her Irish roots through her mother’s side of the family. Her love of anything with peanut butter was legendary, and she harbored lifelong crushes on her favorite leading men – particularly Sam Elliott, John Wayne, Steve McQueen, Robert Redford, and Tom Selleck.

Mom is survived by her beloved children, both by blood and by heart:
• Kevin Harvey | Baker City, Oregon
• Sherrie Kegeler | Adrian, Michigan
• Dawn (Rocky) Rose | Shirley, Indiana
• Terrie (Brian) Swisher | Kalamazoo, Michigan
• Larry Marsh | Salem, Oregon
• Lisa (John) Kline | Melrose, Iowa
• Gerrie (Brian) Higgins | Salem, Oregon
• Angie Marsh | Scottville, Michigan
• John (Nikki) Marsh | Full-time World Travelers (35+ countries & counting!)

She is lovingly remembered by her countless grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren (we stopped tallying them up a long time ago!), along with her daughters- and sons-in-law, and other parents to many of those grandchildren: Christine Harvey, Michael Ruff, Loren Digby, Christopher Vaughn, David Outcalt, and Christina Perez-Rafter; her brother Richard (Eliza) Devlin and sister Muriel (Bob) King; her sister-in-law Anna (Jack) Allee; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends whose lives she touched during her lifetime.

Mom was preceded in death by her children Michael Wing and William “Billy” Wing, her grandchildren Jeremy Harvey, William Wing, and Jesse “J.C.” Hale; her beloved mother, Cecilia (Maloney) Allee and her father, Dallas Allee; her siblings Luverne Allee, Carol (Allee) Sutherland, Daniel “Dan” Allee, Clarice “Peggy” Allee, Dianne (Allee) Thompson, and Dallas “Jack” Allee; her daughters-in-law Jadwiga Kloc and Bonnie Harvey, and her son-in-law Wayde Perry (who was her beloved partner in crime when it came to practical jokes), along with the fathers of her children: Elvin “Butch” Harvey, Rodger Wing, Roy Rose, and Darrell Marsh.

We wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at The Waters of Middletown Skilled Nursing Facility and Heart to Heart Hospice for the compassionate care, comfort, and dignity that they provided to Mom during the last months of her life.

In honor of Mom’s memory, we ask that donations be made to support Alzheimer’s research, or to your local animal rescue organization of choice. You can also honor Mom by adopting a pet in need and giving them a “furever home.”

Mom’s initial memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 20, at Shirley Friends Church, 101 Main Street, Shirley, IN 47384. A second service will take place in Baker City, Oregon, in 2026, where Mom’s ashes will be laid to rest in the state that she always considered to be home.

Condolences may be sent to The Family of Dee Rose, c/o Dawn Rose, P.O. Box 345, Shirley, IN 47384.

We take comfort in knowing that Mom is now at peace in the arms of Jesus and reunited with the loved ones who have gone before her.

Louie David Smith, age 78, of Knightstown, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his residence at 10:41 pm on Monday, August 11, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Louie was born on Monday, December 16, 1946, in Sumter, South Carolina, to the late Jesse and Maggie (Baker) Smith.
Louie attended Edmunds High School in Sumter, South Carolina. Following high school, he decided to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army, where he earned the rank of sergeant and proudly and selflessly protected and served his country for 20 years and 11 days. Louie was quick to remind those he knew not to forget about the additional “11 days.” After retiring from his career with the US Army, Louie continued to work and became a delivery driver for Auto Value and continued working up until his retirement in 2013.
Louie enjoyed many things in his life. Louie liked to listen to classic country music artists such as Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton. His favorite television shows were Gilligan’s Island and Fox News. He loved classic western movies, especially with his favorite actor John Wayne, and enjoyed the Ernest movies. He liked classic old cars, and he enjoyed NASCAR and the Indy 500 races. Louie also liked to watch the speeding cars from his front porch get pulled over by the Knightstown Police Department.
Louie always kept his family on their toes; he liked letting off firecrackers with his hands.
When it came to food, Louie loved his Subway sandwiches and drinking an ice-cold Coke with them.
The most important thing to Louie was his family and friends. He loved them and they adored him. Louie was a longtime roommate of his friend, Carla Purvis. Carla’s children referred to Louie as “Uncle Lou Dog.” Louie stepped up and became a father figure to Carla’s children, and as the children grew into adulthood and had their children, he happily took on the role of grandfather. He took the role of father and grandfather very seriously, and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for his family. According to his family, "He made sure they had everything they could ask for, even if they were being roody poots.”
As Louie grew older, his son Alexander Bolton made the decision to relocate to the small town of Knightstown and move Louie in with him and his family. This move gave Louie a safe place to walk around. Louie never met a stranger; he would speak with anyone he met and made many friends. He was able to enjoy his life at the small-town pace. Louie was grateful to be able to live with Alexander and his daughter-in-law Kaetlyn. Kaetlyn stepped in and took wonderful care of Louie as his health deteriorated and continued to care for him until he took his last breath. According to Louie’s family,
“Louie loved all his grandkids equally, but his firstborn-grandson was special; Louie would ‘sneak’ to the store and buy ‘his boy’ anything and everything.”
In addition to Carla, Alexander, and Kaetlyn, also mourning the loss of Louie are his children, Ema Evans (Lorenzo Sevilla), Russ (Jasmine) Bolton, and Liliana; grandchildren Isaias, Joscelin, Idalia, Justice, Eliezer, and Cataleya; and his very close fellow veteran friends Keith Johnson and Yvonne Couch, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He is also survived by Brutus the dog, whom he absolutely loved, or as he referred to him, his “little knot-head.”
Louie was preceded in death by his mother, father, and siblings.
Louie will be always loved, never forgotten, and forever missed by every life he touched.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Evangel Church located at 1221 East Main Street, Greenfield, Indiana, 46140, with funeral services to follow.
Chaplain Keith Johnson will be officiating the service.

Linda Sue Westrich
November 1, 1952 – July 16, 2025
Linda Sue Westrich, age 72, of Shirley, Indiana, passed away peacefully at her home early Wednesday morning, July 16, 2025. She was born on Saturday, November 1, 1952, in New Castle, Indiana, the daughter of the late George and Auralenneth (McDaniel) Thalls.
A 1971 graduate of Eastern Hancock High School, Linda was a gifted athlete and proudly became the first female recipient of the GAA (Girls Athletic Association) award in basketball at Eastern Hancock.
On January 9, 1991, she married Dennis Westrich, and they shared nearly 35 wonderful years together. They had a daughter together, joining their daughters from their previous marriages into a wonderful family. Linda was a devoted mother and a hardworking woman. In addition to raising her children, she worked outside the home at Shirley Foods, and in 1994, she and Dennis took a leap of faith and opened Shirley Hardware. For the next 23 years, the hardware store was more than just a place to buy supplies—it was a place where people became friends with Linda, who was kind & welcoming, never having met a stranger.
Her laugh was infectious and could light up a room. Linda had a deep love for music, enjoying everything from classic rock like The Beatles to traditional gospel. She was a longtime member of the Shirley-Wilkinson Community United Methodist Church. She enjoyed watching Survivor and action movies, and she was a loyal sports fan—cheering for the Colts, especially Peyton Manning.
Linda had a heart as big as her smile. She loved gardening and animals, even the little rabbits that occasionally found their way into her garden. She was a beloved member of her community and continued working at Shirley Hardware until she and Dennis made the bittersweet decision to retire in 2017. In retirement, Linda and Dennis continued to serve others through volunteer work and missionary trips. But above all, Linda’s favorite role was being with her family—loving her people as a wife, mom, Mamaw, and GG. She was their biggest fan, their constant cheerleader, and their heart. Linda will be missed more than words can express.
She is survived by her loving husband, Dennis; daughters Jennifer (Benjamin) Burton, Patricia (Mark) Adkins, Andrea (Jim) Back, and Kristi Heath (Cameron Park); grandchildren Aubrie Osborn, Robert (Cybill) Kincaid, Alexander Burton, Cyrus Burton, Taylor Mercer, Kelsey Mercer, Samantha Back, Christopher Back, Bailey Back, and Lorraine Heath; and 9 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Linda was preceded in death by her sisters Martha Thalls, Rena Smith, and Nila Jean Davis and granddaughter Meghan Lea Mercer.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 21, 2025, at Shirley-Wilkinson United Methodist Church, 309 South Street, Shirley, IN 47384.
Funeral services will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the same location, with Pastor Rick Hutson officiating. Burial will follow at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson, Indiana.

Tamara Fay Alvarez
December 23, 1962–April 5, 2025
Tamara Fay Alvarez, aged 62, of Greenfield, Indiana, passed away at the Brickyard Healthcare at Brandywine in Greenfield, Indiana, at 9:22 am on Saturday, April 5th, 2025. Tamara was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late Clyde and Judy (Biggerstaff) Elliott on Sunday, December 23, 1962. Tamara attended Beech Grove City Schools. Tamara was a hardworking woman. She had an incredible 48-year career working as a waitress at various restaurants. Anyone who has ever worked serving customers in the restaurant industry knows that this type of job is a very demanding, difficult, high-stress job. Many servers spend long hours on their feet, at times are not treated respectfully, and earn minimal pay. Tamara was not like other servers. She worked at the Waffle House and earned her 15-year service pin and was 2 years shy of earning her 20-year service pin. She loved working at the Waffle House. She adored her Waffle House family and friends, and they also loved her. Her family jokingly shared that she had so much Waffle House memorabilia throughout the home and also coffee cups from each year that she was employed there. The only job she loved more was dedicating her life to the job she loved the most, being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Tamara and her love, Albert, were together for 30 years; they were united in marriage on Tuesday, May 9th, 2000, and would have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this May. Tamara raised three children, whom she absolutely adored: Danielle, Brett, and Thomas.
Tamara liked all types of music, from classic rock groups such as Journey and heavy metal bands such as Metallica to soul music like Al Green.
Tamara’s favorite television shows were “Mom,” “King of Queens,” “Yellowstone,” and true crime documentaries. Her favorite movies were the entire John Wick series, “The Jerk,” and “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
Tamara loved spending time with her family having cookouts, going camping, and tubing on the lake. If you entered the house and it smelled absolutely amazing, Tamara was probably cooking up one of her favorite dishes of liver and onions, although she was the only one in the house who would eat it. She would most likely have her favorite drink along with it, a Coca-Cola. When she wasn’t drinking her soda, she was most likely sipping on a cup of coffee, but it couldn’t be just any ordinary cup of coffee. Tamara kept her secret stash with her at all times: her Coffee Mate Powder Coffee Creamer. Her family jokingly shared that “she was obsessed with it, and it went with her everywhere.” She made the absolute best banana pudding. Her family said it tasted so delicious that they would fight over it. They would tease each other by “pretending” to eat all of it by taking a picture of an empty bowl and then sending it to the other family members to make each other mad. Tamara would always make sure there was enough for everyone, and if you weren’t home, she would set some aside and save some to make sure you didn’t get left out.
Tamara loved all kinds of animals, but she especially loved her little Shih Tzu dogs, Oso and Oliver. In her spare time, Tamara enjoyed working on puzzles and going shopping. Tamara collected turquoise pieces and also collected seashells. She had touches of ocean-themed decor throughout her house. This stemmed a lot from the travels she had made in her life. She lived in Florida and traveled back there from time to time. She visited Key West and fell in love with the area, thinking it would be a perfect place for her and Alfred to live after retirement. She also was happy to visit one of the seven most beautiful natural wonders of North America, Niagara Falls. Tamara had a strong sense of spirituality. Her compassion and kindness touched countless lives, and she always had a smile or a kind word for those who were in need. While not affiliated with any particular religious institution, she made numerous friends throughout her 48 years working with the public.
Tamara’s love for her family and friends
