Over the years, working closely with dogs and their people has given me opportunities to confront parts of myself that were formed very early in life. You can call it attachment, early conditioning, or even the “inner child". Whatever language you prefer, dogs respond to our nervous system, not just our cues.

When a dog reacts to tension, inconsistency, over-control, or collapse, they’re often responding to patterns that existed in us long before we ever picked up a leash. Many of those patterns operate at a subconscious level, shaping our tone, posture, and timing without us realizing it.

That’s part of why I tread carefully in this work. Dogs can access those early layers quickly, not because something is wrong with us, but because attachment and nervous system patterns are biological systems.

This evolution in my training isn’t about getting abstract. It’s about recognizing that behavior lives inside relationship, and relationship lives inside the nervous system.

“Delayed processing” is a phrase I learned late in life. It explains something Ive quietly carried for years. Better late than never.

Delayed processing is not a single diagnosis. It is a processing profile. It shows up across neurodivergent populations, especially autism, ADHD, trauma histories, and highly sensitive nervous systems. It can also appear situationally in anyone under load. For some people, it is a stable, trait-level way the brain works.

Delayed Processing means the brain prioritizes accuracy, depth, pattern integration, and internal coherence over speed. Information is taken in, routed through multiple layers, and only then expressed. Output lags behind input on purpose, even when it feels involuntary. That lag is not confusion. It is computation.

I had a long discussion the other day with a mental health professional about psychological projections and whether they’re harmful.

He was firm: projections are not harmful.

And I agree, at the individual level, they’re not.

Projection is a normal human process. It’s how we fill in gaps when we don’t have full information. Most projections stay inside the person making them unless they act on them.

Where I take it a step further is scale.

If one person projects, it’s perception.
If a group shares the projection, it becomes narrative.
If that narrative gains authority, it becomes behavior or policy.

History gives us examples of this pattern. The Salem witch trials began with fear and belief that gained collective agreement and enforcement. A psychological story became legal action.

More recently, during COVID, a real biological threat existed. People did get sick and die. But alongside the virus, fear and interpretation also spread — and collective perception shaped rules, norms, and social behavior at massive scale.

Projection itself isn’t the danger.

Projection fused with amplification and authority is where consequences begin.

What I’ve learned over time is that self-knowledge changes the equation. The more clearly we can recognize what is ours, what belongs to someone else, and what belongs to a collective story, the more choice we have in whether we participate in it.
