GO BLUE!
Dr. Hooe is a proud Alum of The University of Michigan Dental School and Oral Surgery residency.

"This is the fourth consecutive year that Shanghai Ranking has named the University of Michigan as the top dental school in the world. Earlier this year, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) named the school the third best in the world and the top school in the United States."

Once again, the United States has dominated the Academic Ranking of World Universities report of the world’s best dental schools, with seven of the top 10 institutions.

When a procedure is completed at North Sound Oral Surgery, disinfection of the operatory becomes an intense focus. Disposable barriers which cover the patient chair and high touch surfaces are changed. All cabinet surfaces, handles, and counter surfaces are thoroughly wiped with hospital grade disinfectant. Finally, the room is misted with a gentle yet powerful disinfectant known as hypochlorous acid. Hypochlorous acid is a powerful oxidant which is formed as chlorine (with the help of an electric current) is dissolved in water. In our own bodies, small quantities of hypochlorous acid are made by white blood cells known as neutrophils. Neutrophils play an important role in our immune system by destroying foreign bodies. Hypochlorous acid is also used as a disinfectant in the food service industry. Unlike its cousin chlorine bleach, hypochlorous is not a caustic agent; it is not harmful to skin or other bodily surfaces.

A mist of hypochlorous acid is effective at eliminating airborne viruses and bacteria, and adds a second layer of disinfection to all surfaces in the room. Misting with hypochlorous acid happens between every patient at North Sound Oral Surgery:

On March 19, 2020, Governor Jay Inslee ordered a halt to elective surgeries and dental services in Washington State. This is prudent action; we applaud the Governor and his advisors for enacting this difficult measure. You can read the Governor’s press release here: https://www.governor.wa.gov/news-media/inslee-orders-halt-elective-surgeries-and-dental-services-reserve-critical-equipment

Governor Inslee’s order also makes it clear the restriction does not apply to treatment for patients with emergency and urgent needs. Keeping non-COVID-19 patients OUT OF THE HOSPITAL SYSTEM is a critical mission. With this in mind, Governor Inslee’s order is clear: “Doctors can perform elective procedures if delaying the procedure would cause harm to the patient in the next three months.”

The problems we face are complex: Not only are medical supplies are in short supply, but hospitals are already working at full capacity and may soon be overwhelmed. Health care professionals across all disciplines actually have TWO critical missions 1) Decrease the burden on our hospital system (and potential spread of the virus) by keeping patients out of the ER 2) Preserve Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the healthcare workers directly caring for patients hospitalized with COVID-19

The American Dental Association simply declares “Concentrating on emergency dental care alleviates the burden that dental emergencies would place on hospital emergency departments.”

North Sound Oral Surgery is prepared to treat emergency oral surgery patients during this difficult period. We have a limited quantity of appropriate PPE which requires us to be rigorously selective regarding the patients we see, and what treatments we provide. As PPE availability improves, we hope to increase our office hours and ability to care for emergency patients.

The last few weeks has been an unprecedented in the realm of healthcare. Communities around the world- particularly here in our own backyard, are working hard to eliminate the spread of COVID-19. Oral surgery offices provide essential care to patients suffering from pain, infection, trauma, and potentially life changing pathology. With this in mind, we plan to continue seeing patients the face of this pandemic, but on a somewhat limited basis. Our first obligation is keeping patients, staff, and their families & friends safe. We have a role to play in keeping our community healthy. To that end we will be screening each of our patients by reviewing COVID-centered questions and taking body temperature with a forehead thermometer. We will defer exams and procedures on anyone with fever / respiratory symptoms. We all defer exams and procedures on anyone that has been in contact with someone symptomatic. We may elect to defer less urgent procedures, choosing instead to focus on matters which threaten quality of life. Universal precautions against transmission of infection are a standard of dental care. North Sound Oral Surgery has enhanced the standard regimen by adding regularly scheduled disinfection protocols of public and clinic spaces. We are protecting ourselves as well as our patients with advanced barrier protection strategies. We are closely monitoring and will follow all developments regarding CDC and WHO guidelines regarding management of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thanks for your understanding.
